Advantages Advantages A good value, excellent read.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None.

--THE GUARDIAN--- When I buy a paper I want one that offers great all round content. I really look forward to Saturday when I purchase the Guardian. It's just really good value. I don't really get much time these days to actually read a newspaper during the week, as I am so busy writing all the time, but I still try to find time to read a few newspapers at the weekends. My newspaper of choice for Saturday is the Guardian broadsheet. Sister newspaper to the Observer, the Guardian has been in business as a daily newspaper following the early success of the Manchester Guardian. The Guardian is ... more

Advantages Advantages Left-wing, good writers, excellent news coverage, G2

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not enough sport and far too interested in London

Every morning I follow the same pattern, after my lecture at 10:00 am, I go to the shop to pick up my 15p (student price) Guardian, read the front and back pages in that seventies style kitchen and go off to another lecture. I start reading the paper again at about 10:00 pm with the dark, gloomy Glasgow night staring at me coldly outside. In the morning I read the editorials, letters and business section at breakfast and the cycle continues... On weekdays The Guardian is my guide to what is going on in the world around me. I spend most of my life within a five mile radius, so it would be all ... more

Advantages Advantages Easily available; good value for money; soon to be in Berliner size

Disadvantages Disadvantages Quite bulky due to lots of supplements; no "Northerner" section in the newspaper

I quite like The Guardian. I don't buy it every day - I mainly get it on Mondays when it has the Media supplement - but I certainly try and read the news and features on the website. I sometimes read the newspaper in the library as well. The Guardian newspaper, which is a national, daily broadsheet, began life as the "Manchester Guardian" in 1821 and it had its roots firmly in the North West until the word "Manchester" was dropped from the title in 1959. In 1961 the newspaper began to print in London. By 1964, its editorial headquarters had moved to the capital. Since then, it's had a very ... more

Advantages Advantages Not Murdoch, G2, readers' editor

Disadvantages Disadvantages A little bit London-centric

As an almost archetypal soft-left liberal do-gooding pinko, you would expect me to read the Guardian, and your guess would be right. But I think it's highly unfair to confine it to this ghetto. The paper can stand on its own merits. First, let's have a look at the paper's design. This is an area of controversy, as quite a few people dislike it, but I'm not among them. Maybe it's that I've read the paper for so long, but I very rarely have difficulty finding the items I want to read. I like the fact that the basic design has remained broadly similar for some years now - nothing annoys me more ... more

actually buying the Guardian a few years ago. I still read it because we get it at work, but I just wouldn't spend my money on it these days, despite it being the paper that probably comes closest to my own political views. Why don't I like it? Well, first of all, on a technical basis, I can't stand the layout. I find it really, really hard to read. They've tried to use all sorts of feature page design tricks like leaving lots of space and arty use of pics in the news pages, and to my mind it just doesn't work when you've got so much text and so much space, and so little to pull it into a ... more
