Paul Theroux is a bit miserable, really. You have to admit it. In The Happy Isles of Oceania he is at his irrascible best looking for escape amongst the idyllic islands of the South Pacific, only to find that they are inhabited by people (shock). Fully equipped with a collapsible kayak, a fierce stare and a stash of food he paddles his way from island to island trying to avoid being murdered by locals. You can't help but wondering if the locals were actually trying to stop him from killing himself in the treacherous waters and just wanted to take him back to their huts to watch TV and drink solar power-cooled beer. We will never know.
An interesting book about a journey around the authors head.
