Advantages: excellent new chapter in the Anita Blake Saga Disadvantages: does not answer many series questions and adds more to the pot
...for answers to some of the big Anita Blake questions ( will she ever settle down and manage to live peacfully with the men in her life for example) then this book will still keep you hanging, the twists and turns in the main storyline are throughout this book and whilst some series answers are not forthcoming there are some wonderful new impacts here for Anita to deal with and a great storyline to add to the series,
For those of you ... ...this is the 14th book you could still read this on it\'s own as it is most definately not a book without it\'s own story however by reading the whole series this book brings a heightened interest to some of the areas only touched upon in the earlier books,
The council appears to be back with a vengance and the mysteries of the need for Anita to own a pomme de sang are worked though thoroughly in this next episode,

It is a strong read which is easy to pick up but very hard to put down, there are some very adult scenes though any one who is familar with this series will already be comfortable with these,
You will grow to love your favourite characters more through this book be it Jean-Claude ,Richard , Nathaniel or Micah you are routing for you will find more background and in-depth knowledge throughout, which helps to build the strength of the characters and pulls the reader much deeper into their world of werewolves, vampires and lust.

Advantages: Hot vampire/werewolf naughtiness with spooky thrills. Disadvantages: Too many ramblings about relationships at the expense of the plot.
...have been sharply divided over the direction this longstanding series has taken: a quick Google will bring up some highly entertaining spats on assorted chat forums. Basically, if you enjoyed the earlier books but got freaked out by the kinky sex that started featuring more and more heavily after Narcissus in Chains then there's going to be plenty more to freak you through the wall and back in this one. However, if you enjoy great chunks of spooky ...

Advantages: More background info, Disadvantages: Lacking in action a little
...I thought that the baddies in the book were poorly explained- they seem really awful until the end where they are defeted too easily. The relationsips between Anita and her men are expanded upon in this book. I liked that- there are a few conversations that clear up questions that had been left hanging . There is also a pricless conversation between Anita and Edward! The background of the main characters is also expanded upon- we learn about Jean ...

Manufacturer's product description
The first warning is unexpected, calculated. Malcolm, head of the vampire Church of Eternal Life, is no friend to Anita Blake. So when he asks for help, against creatures so feared that no vampire will willingly speak their name, Anita is surprised. But the Harlequin require different rules. The second warning is presented like a gift, with Anita' printed on the box. Inside, carefully wrapped in folds of pristine tissue paper, is a plain white mask. The fact that it's white is good news. White means they are only being watched. The power connecting Anita with Jean-Claude, vampire Master of the City and Richard, Ulfric of the werewolves, has been increasing exponentially - and this has attracted very unwelcome attention. Anita Blake has the authority to pass judgment on vampires. The Harlequin have the authority to pass judgment on her. It is forbidden to speak of the Harlequin unless you've been contacted. And to be contacted by The Harlequin is to be under sentence of death.

The writing is taut and effecive, and several stand alone scenes are magnificent. The conclusion, had it been published as a stand alone novella, would have been wonderful.
Nothing happens, and there is some nasty use of forced incest as a means to create a tawdry shock. Oh, and nothing happens. (*)
Stephen King's claim to fame ; Superb atmosphere ; Sublime plot ; A vivid imagination that stretches all supernatural boundaries ; Probably responsible for some of the best horror films of the 70's and 80's
Some unessesary background in the first half ; Kubrik mucked up the story too much ; Could have been much more (*)
