You know, I first read this book when I was 9 (I am now 33). Since that time I have lost count of the number of times I read it. This book was a leather bound book sat In my mothers book case (I own it now).
Unlike the lord of the rings, the book centres around a hobbit called bilbo bagins. The book initially goes into great depth describing where hobbits live what they are and aren't! What they do and don't!
This particular hobbit had previous generations of family who walked in slightly different circles to that of regular hobbits and so it was inevitable that one day he would walk in those circles too.
In demonstrating this Tolkien immediately used a character called Gandalf (he was a wizard). Gandalf opened the door to those different circles, which obviously the hobbit (reluctantly) went through.
The story begins with Gandalf inviting 13dwarves (without bilbos knowledge or permission) to Bilbo's house for tea to discuss the adventure they were about to set out on. Unbeknown to bilbo he was about to play a very important role as a Thief.

After the dwaves ate bilbo out of house and home, Gandalf dropped the adventure on bilbos lap.

The adventure is set around the dwaves reclaiming what is rightfully theirs. This was Misty mountain and more gold than you can shke a stick at! The present keeper of this gold was a rather large bad tempered dragon called Smaug.

Misty Mountain was a long way from where the hobbit lived and the story is all about getting to misty mountain and the adventures they have on the way.

The book contains all you would expect from fantasy adventure; Elves, goblins, trolls and and exceptionally nasty creature named Gollum whom most of us have heard about in the lord of the rings from the very popular movie. This is the creature who posessed the ring of power.

This book is an all time classic and with it being shorter than the lord of the rings, it is better for the younger generation to read and not get bored with. If you haven't read this book yet it is time you went out got yourself a copy and read it!!
