...secret which was clearly troubling the main character, so you had to keep reading in the hope that all would be revealed.
It was set in two different periods, 1914 and 1999, with the same main character linking the two. I much prefered the parts of the novel set in the past, and luckily this was the majority of the novel, there were some parts of the plot set in the modern day which seemed irrelevent at the time, although with hind sight, did help ...

Advantages: Easy to read & understand, shock twists, mystery, suspense, love. Disadvantages: One predictable plotline, no impact on the main shock twists though.
...say I was gripped from the outset.
The plot is rich with description, taking you back to the decadent 20s with ease, and the depth of the relationship between the 3 main female characters is very compelling. As the characters develop from girlish innocence into womanhood, you are brought along with the power of a character's hindsight that touches your heart.
I won't give too much away as there are twists aplently that make this book excellent, ... ...from my usual literature - I went on to buy a few other books like The House At Riverton however none have yet compared.
Intrigue, mystery, love and decadence.....this book has it all. Bus stops will be missed, TV programmes will get recorded, in short....it is a page turner! ...

Advantages: It's easy reading and the author has a sharp eye for detail. Disadvantages: It can be a little slow in parts.
It's the life story of Grace. It's a tale which works on different levels, between Upstairs and Downstairs, war and peace, as the story slips between the life iof young Grace in domestic service in the house at Riverton and Grace in her 90's in a care home. It focuses on the life of the servants, the upper class family and guests and in particular the Hartford sisters.
The plot revolves around a film which is being shot of the tragedies which took ... ...and the suicide of a poet , who was once a house guest. Grace is invited, as sole survivor to view the film sets and comment on the characters and she is promised a viewing when the film is released. All the interest awakens memories and secrets Grace hoped to forget.
By the end of the book it becomes apparent that the film misses the truth of the situation entirely and that is down to the ability of Grace to keep a secret. It's an easy read, nothing ...

Reviews which might be of interest for "The House at Riverton - Kate Morton"
Advantages: Unique, enchanting, fascinating characters Disadvantages: A few 'cheesy' bits
?s book club, which also recommends it because they seem to choose modern literature that?s different to most of the relationship twaddle churned out nowadays. KateMorton is an Australian author with a strong interest (and a degree) in English literature. The House At Riverton is also published under the name The Shifting Fog and Morton?s second novel, The Authoress, is being released in the UK on the 6th July 2007. See www.katemorton.com for information ? I certainly will. If The Authoress is as good as The House At Riverton, I think we?ll be seeing a lot more of KateMorton in future. ...
Advantages: Compelling and intriguing storyline, beautifully written Disadvantages: Some predictable plot twists
'The House At Riverton' is KateMorton's debut novel. It is one of the most exciting, intriguing and beautifully written debuts to be discovered in a long time. It transfers between the past (1914 onwards) and present (1999), centring around ninety-eight year old Grace Bradley. Through memories recounted by Grace we are taken back to an intriguing life of a servant girl, working in a rich family's stately home, where mysteries are uncovered and forgotten secrets surface. The twists and turns of fate and intervention make it a gripping read.
The opening page grabs the reader's attention with a flashback to 1924 to a scene of a girl splattered in blood. We do not know what has happened, we get no details about the date, the place and who the people are in the scene. Immediately the reader is transfixed with the mystery surrounding ...
inclusion, and I shall keep this new channel well fed with KateMorton's literature and hopefully other similar authors. For now, though, I think I'll immerse myself in some of my 'trash' to wipe away the tears that almost fell down my face as I finished The House At Riverton. It's a wonderful novel. Do read it.
The House At Riverton is available in most bookshops. If you can find it at a low price online or in a second hand bookshop or charity shop, then grab it quick - it'll be a bargain. Similarly, it's well worth its retail price of £7.99. A thoroughly good read and one that I will remember for a long time. ...
