A beautiful, peaceful day is brought crashing to an end for Mitch, who not only discovers that his beloved wife has been kidnapped, but that the people he is dealing with are very serious, proven as they murder a seemingly 'innocent' dogwalker just to empasize the fact that they're really not joking.. Mitch- a character Koontz attempts to have us warm to from the start, he's the lead, why wouldn't we want to warm to him?
Well, my main problem with this is that he's an incredibly two dimensional man. He's the typical stereotype of what is supposed to be passed off as happiness. He owns his own business, made even better by the fact it's his hobby, he's blissfully happy in his marriage, he's fit, toned, goodlooking.
I already don't like him. Yeah, so he's only a gardener, but who cares if he has everything else?

It's almost like you feel he deserves what he gets.

Despite my reservations regarding the main character, I am an avid Koontz fan, I read him for the first time at age 9, whilst snooping through my mother's books. I have since, read almost every novel written by him, and there are only a handful I have not enjoyed.
This book was no exception to the general rule, despite finding most of the characters very 'too good to be true' and in turn- boring, I liked the plot itself.
Ok, so it reeks of a total lack of realism, but, you don't read it for that, so it doesn't matter.
I LOVED the plot twist regarding the brother, call me naive if you like, but I honestly never saw it coming. I thoroughly enjoyed the dynamics of the psychotic kidnapper, he's actually I think the only char in the book that I felt had something about him, wanted to hear more of his signs and stories. I have to admit to being a little disappointed with reagards to the ending. It seemed to have been cut short, felt a little empty, no, I couldn't have done any better myself, but when I closed the book I just felt there should have been more.
Typical 'Good wins over evil, happily ever after, Love Conquers all- blah blah..' Show me something where the bad guy comes out on top for a change..
The book kept me entertained, but not so much as previous works have done.
