Hyperion - Dan Simmons

Advantages: Gripping Sci-Fi that I recommend to everyone I meet!
Disadvantages: Not enough sequels.

This book has a number of archetypal forms. It starts out as a quest with a collection of characters visiting the fabled time tombsof the planet Hyperion. The dramatic appearances of The Shrike, an unstoppable death-machine force you to question every event from the very beginning. The erratic nature of the creature and its obtuse motivation lace the story with terror form the very begining. As the first of the Hyperion books it immediately hooks the reader - I couldn't put it or The Fall of Hyperion down! Its a refreshing book in the sci-fi genre as they storyline is truly engaging. As the tale develops it becomes apparent how interlinked the questors are and the events that happen to them. Its like some huge, off-world Agatha Christie mystery wrapped in a ever-darkening blanket of fear. ...

Follow The Yellow Brick Road

Advantages: Masterful story-telling, very strong characters
Disadvantages: None

If you think that the Web dominates communications today, get yourself put into cryogenic fugue for eight hundred years or so, and if Dan Simmons? vision comes to pass, not only will they actually be able to revive you, you?ll be able to see *real* Web domination. For the Web of the twenty-ninth century draws communities together *physically* ? its gateways are Farcaster portals which can interconnect on demand to give zero travel time between two points. (Fancy a residence built on a dozen different planets? No problem. Dinner at that restaurant you found while on honeymoon? Be there in five. Office space in the crisp air of the high mountains accessed from a door in your country retreat? Very popular these days). But not all known worlds are Web-connected, and travel beyond the technological gossamer still incurs the time ...

The Work of a Genius

Advantages: Incredible plot, wonderfully written, superb characters
Disadvantages: the ending

Imagination is a word so often overused, but the thing is so often unused in the modern world. I have always had a very active imagination, but often found it difficult to put down in word form exactly what I want to say . Strange that. That you can have all the ideas and thoughts in all the world, but lack the skill to set it out plainly before you. Or so I think. I have actually written the beginnings of a book, a horror with no title. The first chapter is done and readings with my family have proved very favourable. Its just when you read such as HYPERION by Dan Simmons that you realise just how inferior and just downright crap your own work is. --------------------------------------------------- And so on with the review. Hyperion was released almost 15 years ago now and at the time took the book world by storm. It ...
