...Although this workbook claims that it 'supports curriculum teaching in the UK and Ireland', it does considerably more than just preparing pupils for the SATs tests that they sit towards the end of Year 6. It features a broad outlook on the English language, covering a myriad of topics from Malapropisms to reported speech.
For a child interested in creative writing, there is plenty here to inspire, and for those that find English a little dull, there is a sprinkling of humour here and there. A page entitled 'Puns' initially asks the child to complete a list of homophones (such as aloud and allowed), and then asks them to choose some of the paired words to write sentences containing puns, giving the example 'My pony is a little hoarse today.' ...During the summer I was browsing in a book shelf when to my amazement I saw a new Dick Francis. As he was supposed to have retired, and I knew he was getting on a bit I checked, and it really was a new book. It was also half price. I gave my husband a nudge and said there is a Christmas present for me if anyone is stuck.
I forgot all about it till Christmas and there it was, a fat shiny hardback book - Under Orders.
I received several books for Christmas and kept this one for 2nd place. Then 3rd place as I read it so quickly I re-read it slowly to assimilate it better. A common failing of mine.
The book went seamlessly from the last Sid Halley mystery to this one but is a good read without having read any previous Sid Halley books.
