audio book. Jacqueline Wilson has the ability to tackle difficult subjects with spirit and affection but without a trace of sentimentality and without patronising the reader or her characters. This always makes her books rewarding and emotionally satisfying. In The Illustrated Mum, Wilson introduces us to Dolphin, a young girl living in the wake of her tattooed mother Marigold's manic depression. With her older sister, Star, on the brink of adulthood and facing the traumas of adolescence and her mum sinking further and further into her illness, Dol has no-one to turn to. The constant bullying at school causes her to withdraw into her own world and she begins to cope by fantasising that she is a witch. Far from being depressing or overwhelming, The Illustrated Mum features another of Wilson's classic heroines. Dol deals with the extraordinary circumstances of her life with a mixture of humour and quiet intelligence that blossoms as the situation reaches its inevitable climax. The story is suitable for ages nine and above and the running time is six hours and 25 minutes. --Susan Harrison

Advantages: Really emotional, funny, really good to read Disadvantages: Can't think of any
JacquelineWilson, The IllustratedMum
I thought this book was funny, at times, and really emotional at others. It is very realistic and you can?t help by sympathize for the characters in this book.
The book is about a little girl called Dolphin who adores her mother: she?s got wonderful clothes, bright hair and vivid tattoos all over her body. She definitely lives a colourful life. Dolphin?s older sister, Star, also loves her but is beginning to wonder if staying with a mum whose temper can be as flashy as her body-art is the best thing for the girls
Dolphin doesn?t know her father, and Star doesn?t know hers, except that Marigold thinks Micky, Stars father was the love of her life, and Dolphins father only had the same name.
All of a sudden, Marigold gets the chance to meet Stars father again, in a concert, and she ...

gosh. Do you remember how it was to be a child? Has a smell, a sight, a word, ever triggered your memory so that you are sent right back into your own childhood as if it were right there, right then? Reading The IllustratedMum sent me catapulting back into a world long before adulthood and reason and experience and empathy and compromise. Thankfully, I never had to deal with mental illness as a child, let alone the mental illness of a parent, but JacquelineWilson's Dolphin made me remember exactly how it was to be a child, in a world which is direct, vivid, immediate and oh, sometimes just so hard to understand.
I expect I've made it sound a frighteningly bleak book and I suppose, in a way, it is. Mental illness is bleak. Star and Dolphin have spent all their lives creating a dream-world around Marigold's behaviour; it's not an odd ...
Advantages: Well written Disadvantages: Quite a sad book
the downward situation and tries to be positive. Dolphin believes and trusts in her mother like any child would this makes the story very heart-warming. This book allows children to see the problems depression has on people without scaring children.
I thought this book was really interesting and made me realise that there were quite serious problems at such a young age. I was a little scared when I first read it because of the things the mother does. But I did think it was very good and I read it in one day because I could not wait to see what happened. This book made me cry and laugh and although I did not take it too seriously gave me a lot to think about. I really did enjoy this book and would recommend everyone to read it. I think JacquelineWilson does well to get into a child's mind. I liked the way the story developed and thought the story ...
