"Big screen action from four crude friends"

The Inbetweeners is a popular comedy series that was shown on Channel 4 about 4 high school boys and their hilarious exploits. In 2011, a movie was made of The Inbetweeners telling the story of the four boys misadventures as they go away together on a foreign holiday.

The Inbetweeners Movie is about friends Will McKenzie, Simon Cooper, Jay Cartwright and Neil Sutherland, who decide to celebrate finishing their exams and leaving Rudge Park Comprehensive, by taking a holiday to Malia, Crete. After Jay's grandfather dies, Simon is dumped by his girlfriend Carli, and Will's divorced father tells him he has married his young mistress, a holiday proves the perfect tonic for them all. However on their arrival in Malia, they boys discover that their hotel is disgusting but decide to make the most of their holiday. Despite various mishaps the boys meet four girls, Alison, Lucy, Lisa and Jane in a bar and each of them develop relations with one of the girls to varying degrees of success. It also transpires that Simon’s ex-girlfriend Carli is in the same holiday resort complicating matters as Simon pines after her. As the holiday continues, it could prove to be the undoing of their friendship as they suffer one mishap after another.

I enjoyed this coming-of-age comedy film which manages to capture the humour of the TV series. It is a funny and crude story although will appeal to fans of the TV series, it may not prove popular with others. The jokes are typical school boy jokes and are also visual. The use of special effects is limited in this film and it is more of a character driven story. The four main characters work well together and provide many of the laughs. Most people will remember their first holiday away with friends and will be able to identify with the exploits of these four boys.

The four lead actors, Simon Bird, James Buckley, Blake Harrison and Joe Thomas all do a brilliant job of playing the main characters of Will, Jay, Neil and Simon. I thought that they were funny and all perform well as the hapless friends. They each have their own unique qualities but I think the crude Jay is my funniest character in the film. The film also stars Laura Haddock, Tamla Kari, Jessica Knappett, Lydia Rose Bewley and Emily Head. Greg Davies makes a brief appearance as the boys’ sardonic former teacher, Mr. Gilbert.

This is a hilarious comedy film directed by Ben Palmer thanks to great performances by the four lead actors. If you liked the TV series, you will love the film.

Review: It has two different gag ratios - the laughter one, and the urge-to-spew one. Both are high. (Daily Telegraph, 2011-11-21)

[...] this is gag-for-gag the funniest film of the summer and a fitting end to a much-loved series. So long boys, it's been great to know you.
