Review of "The James Street Vaults, Plymouth"
Ciao police (AKA other members) are now policing even my about me!
Not really being much of a fan of the alternative scene in terms of music or social life but much rather the more mainstream and more normal one if there is such a thing, the James Street Vaults is one of those pubs that one would only really personally go to if one had to – such as my nephew and his band playing there; another special charity fundraising event, or one of my many friends holding a birthday party or other such similar event there. It being one of only a very small handful of pubs that very heavily support the punk music scene in Plymouth, it is also the only pub apart from the Student Union bar to be on the actual main University campus in the city. Although of course there are others close by and knowing that students do not really want to go very far, this is also a pub that is very popular with the student population too – and so therefore in this particular pub, you get a mixture of young spotty fresh faced people who make half a shandy last all night; those dreadlock and combat trouser sporting people who are older than they care to own up to, and people who just like me would only really brave it for a quick visit in between pubs.
Generally open between the hours of twelve and twelve, it is the sort of pub that on paper has to offer most soft or alcoholic drinks of sorts – it does however tend to attract those people who drink pints, mainly of lager or similar, and indeed of certain ales but these do tend to change over on a fairly regular basis. Food is generally not served within the pub on those occasions that I have been in attendance here beyond bar snacks, but there are some fast food outlets and takeaways and I have had no complaints about taking food in there apart from people asking me why I have not bought enough for them too.Having recently had a bit of a spruce up, this pub is sadly just a little bit out of the way from the rest of them. There is not really a vast amount of space inside and one does sometime wonder how they get people actually in there for gigs, especially as there is a pool table and a jukebox also on offer for people to use at other times. Price wise it does actually in fact come across as perhaps being just a little bit more expensive than some other pubs and I cannot believe that I am actually going to be saying this, but the atmosphere in this particular pub is so surreal at times that you cannot really put a price on it.
The standard of service in here is what you would expect from a small public house such as this, and in particular one that does not really seem to be attached to a brewery or other such company or organisation as other similar places would be. Overall I cannot really think of much else to say about this particular place, apart from saying that I cannot really compare it to very many other places as it does come across as being one on its own – and so therefore, you really must pay this a visit when you are in the area or else you will not know what you are missing out on.The contact details for this pub for those of you who wish to have it, are as follows:
