This story tells of Pearl and her mother Winnie. They have a typical mother-daughter relationship - you know the one where sometimes you love your mother to death but at other times you just wonder what she's about?

The story introduces Pearl and her mother but then goes on to give the early life of Winnie. The story is a fantastic history lesson, telling the story of war-torn China in World War II.

The story is initially slow, and you DO wonder where it is going, but it pulls you in slowly and your interest for the characters deepens as you continue reading. It is one of those books where when you start reading it you put it down to watch tv, go and do chores etc, but the further in you get the more hooked you become and you find yourself taking it everywhere with you so you can carry on reading.

This book was both pleasing and disappointing for me. I wanted it to be faster and at the end I just wanted more story.

Overall a good read and one that has made me want to look up more of Amy Tan's books for my summer holiday reading.
