I wasn't going to read another Danielle Steele book after finding them too predictable but when I saw The Klone and I my resolve weakened.

gizmo that fused her brain with that of Douglas Adams, author of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. While Steel's umpteenth novel, The Klone and I: A High-Tech Love Story, boasts her typical trappings--a divorced heroine, a cruel man, a sexy man with big money and lots of shopping with brand-name tags conspicuously attached--the book is also the wackiest piece of self-indulgent sci-fi since Douglas Adams's Starship Titanic. The Klone and I starts out normally enough: after a 13-year marriage, Stephanie, 41, gets dumped for a busty young bimbo. "She was gorgeous. And I felt nauseous," Stephanie reflects-- though she admits that things hadn't been going well, what with hubby living off her trust fund and their having sex every six months or so. Realistically, their farewell hug goes like this: "My nose ran on his tie, while ever so cautiously he held me, kind of like a bank robber with sticks of dynamite taped all over his body." Then, one day, on an impulsive trip to the Left Bank of Paris, Steph steps into one of those cool old French elevators with Peter, a hunk in a button-down Oxford shirt and tasteful khakis. Romance! Ritzy places! In fact, he takes her to the Ritz! Alas, Peter must Louvre her and leave her for a business trip out West. So Peter sends Paul to keep her company. Paul is a dead ringer for Peter, because he's a kind of clone created by Peter and his clever biotech company. He's called a "klone" to distinguish him from a conventional clone, which is a mere replica of its original--this "klone" may be a physical copy of Peter, but inside he's had a major id upgrade. As always with Steel, the clue is in the character's clothes: from his high- heeled alligator boots to his zipped zebra jumpsuit, the decidedly non-buttoned-down Paul dresses like a psychedelic kaleidoscope. But when Paul drops that leopard-satin G-string, watch out! It's quadruple flips in flagrante delicto, with our heroine (and, the next morning, her chiropractor) coming out on top. Though Paul deplorably guzzles Chateau d'Yquem by the case and crashes Peter's Jaguar into snow banks, he's actually even more brilliantly empathic with Stephanie's kids than stuffy Peter is. What's a mother to do? Is Steph robbing Peter to play with Paul? How will the ménage à trois affect marriage plans? Does Steel know that her comic tone (though not her subject) actually slightly echoes that of Betty MacDonald's classic comedy memoir The Egg and I, whose title she alludes to? Is the author a convert from fiction to sci-fi, like Doris Lessing? Will the real Ms Steel ever reappear, or has her mind been psychedelicised? --Tim Appelo
Advantages: Fun to read Disadvantages: Unbelievable
...predictable but when I saw The Klone and I my resolve weakened. The main character Stephanie is 41, divorced and at a low ebb when she meets 59 year old Peter in Paris. Her marriage break up 2 years earlier came as a total shock to her. She believed that her and her husband Roger were happy until the day he told her that he had met somebody else, didn’t love her and wanted a divorce. Stephanie blamed the break up on letting herself go and becoming ... ...but it did give her the confidence to help rebuild her life and start dating again.
Some people manage to find new partners quickly after break ups and diminish their feelings of hurt and rejection. Others like Stephanie try the dating game and meet many prospective partners but none ever feel right. After the break up Stephanie realised or perhaps accepted that her husband had used her for a meal ticket. She had a healthy private income and he ...

Another good read Review ofThe Klone and I - Danielle Steelby
Moonflower
Advantages: A good book to read Disadvantages: none
...continue in order to find the outcome of the story. The book is about Stephanie who is married to Roger. They also have two children, Charlotte who is just going into those awkward teenage years and Sam, who younger. Roger states that he no longer loves Stephaine and he leaves her for another woman. This leads Stephanie to take a long hard look at herself. Out go the old flannelette nighties and in come her new clothes and hairstyle. While on a trip ... ...discovers lives nearby. They continue the friendship when they return home. Before long Stephanie realises that she is falling for Peter in a big way. Unfortunately he has to go away on business but he does leave a surprise for her. The surprise lands on her doorstep the next day in the form of a klone called Paul. Advantages: Light hearted with Steel's romantic edge Disadvantages: It's not a weepy!
...predictable I must say. At the beginning of her stories somebody breaks up with somebody else and there are always morbidly depressed for the next 10 chapters. For instance, in Palimino, the guy breaks up with the girl as he feels inferior to her.
I often find this very heavy as I am only a teenager. I have been brought up to think that marriages are forever and will last forever even though I see the statistics stating that 1 in 3 marriages end ... ...I opened this book and the guy leaves the girl, I groaned. Not another sob story, but I decidided to read on anyway. Basically, Stephanie blames herself for the split, thinking that her old flannel nighties and hairy legs did the trick but really, her husband has found a big busted, skinny blond. All of our worst nightmares.
In a radical decision she exchanges her flannels for silky sexy night dresses (except one or two she clings on to for comfort!) ...

Advantages: Something a bit different from Ms. Steel Disadvantages: Something a bit different from Ms. Steel!!!!
...one of her books for the first time, and chose this one, they may not realise why she is classed as a first rate writer. Of course the book is very compelling, like the majority of Steel novels, and I have to admit you do want to know what happens in the end, but unlike her others I could put this one down and not get withdrawal symptoms!
The first few chapters convince you that this is a run of the mill girl meets boy, girl loses boy, girl meets ... ...and for the majority it is, but of course there is a twist. After being dumped by her git of a husband Stephaniem the main character, meets a guy who owns a bionics company, he's lovely and she starts to fall for him, fairly standard stuff, until he goes away and sends her a clone of himself that is a Versace dressed nightmare. Paul, the Klone, is the exact opposite of the man that created him, and is the outgoing party animal his creator isn't, ...
