The last Precinct is actually just the 3rd installment i've this time listened from the Kay Scarpetta Series by Patricia Cornwell. It is still undeniably forensic science complete with gory details at its best. Some interesting developments: it is not just the normal running against time scenario of deciphering body language of dead people (i mean evidence found in dead bodies or whatever is left of it) to stop a crazed killing spree instead the author cleverly added extra pressure and spice by putting the main character's very life, career, reputation on the line. It is as much as giving justice to the dead, saving the next would-be victims and saving the heroine's ah very existence. One just has to reign supreme. However, I was notably (VERY, VERY) disappointed that Dr. Wesley Benton (the Profiler) is no longer with the living characters.
Advantages: less action and more thought from Scarpetta Disadvantages: very little storyline to speak of
PatriciaCornwell sells bucketloads of her Scarpetta crime novels. The latest of these is The LastPrecinct, which again features the trials and tribulations of Dr Kay Scarpetta as she battles her forensic pathologist skills against yet another serial killer.
Is the book any good?, I hear you ask. Well, in a word, no. NO. It's not very good at all. I was a bit concerned when I read the first page. What follows is the first bit of dialogue in the book, on the very first page:
"I want a drink," I announce as I open a dresser drawer . "I want to build a fire and have a drink and make pasta. Yellow and green broad noodles, sweet peppers, sausage. Le papparedelle del cantunzein."
I personally don't find it all that entertaining reading about someone waffling about Italian cookery ALL THE TIME. We get Scarpetta's opinion ...
Advantages: Has some usual Cornwell features Disadvantages: Is slow and boring and not up to the usual standard of Cornwell
PatriciaCornwell's latest novel, The LastPrecinct, is a sequel to her last book, Black Notice, although you could read and follow The LastPrecinct without having read Black Notice. However I do not recommend that you bother reading this book as it is very disappointing.
The book features Dr Kay Scarpetta, as most of Cornwell's novels do, who is the Chief Medical Examiner in Virginia, USA. The other main regular characters are Lucy (Kay's niece who is in the FBI) and Sgt Pete Marino (her friend). In Black Notice, Kay was on the case of a killer called Chandonne who was known as Loup Garoup in France as he looked and acted like a werewolf. The LastPrecinct looks at the repercussions of that case and the effect it has on Kay's career.
She has to make use of "The LastPrecinct" with the help of Lucy and Berger, another FBI agent ...
Advantages: Ties up loose ends left in previous novels. Disadvantages: Does not conclude the investigation well.
I bought LastPrecinct tbe latest in the Kay Scarpetta novels by the American writer PatriciaCornwell as I had already read the previous books and wanted to see what the new novel had to say.
This book was slightly different to the usual Scarpetta novels as Kay Scarpetta herself was under suspcicion of murder. It revolved around her trying to prove her innocence and working out who was trying to frame her. The usual post mortems were also included but their significance did not become apparent until near the end of the book. I felt that the ending was quite hurried and PatriciaCornwell did not give herself enough time to expand on the final details.
All in all it was a good book but not what you would expect from a Scarpetta novel. ...

To celebrate one million copies sold of this contemporary classic, this is a full colour, illustrated edition featuring nine Vermeer paintings integrated with the original text. When Griet becomes a maid in the household of Johannes Vermeer, she thinks she knows her role: housework, laundry and the care of his six children. But as she becomes part of his world and his work, their growing intimacy spreads tension and deception in the ordered household and, as the scandal seeps out, into the town beyond. Tracy Chevalier's extraordinary novel on the corruption of innocence and the price of genius is a contemporary classic, and has sold over two million copies worldwide.
