What a way to experience Tolkien at his finest !!! The Cast held me spellbound for the entire time. Listening to Ian Holm as Frodo was outstanding. I lay in my bed, eyes closed, imagination running wild and free over the terrain, I found myself transported to Middle Earth, and could feel the magic of it all.The feeling of hearing the voices and trying to put faces to them was a task on its own, but they told the story so well, I felt I was there. The music was well placed, and the sorrow was felt. I first read The Lord of the Rings aged 11, and if I had had this back then, it would have made it alot more fun. I could feel Shelob actually crawling on me, almost as if I were Frodo himself. A thoroughly enjoyable way to have this story told to me, instead of struggling to hold the books up in bed, I could lay and relax, and just listen. Thank you for taking the time to read my experience of a true masterpiece xx I am updating this review on the advice of several members, which was well-placed, as this is my first review. The cast of characters were as follows. Frodo Baggins : Ian Holm Gandalf : Micael Hordern Aragorn : Robert Stephens Gollum : Peter Woodthorpe Bilbo Baggins : John Le Mesurier Samwise Gamgee : William Nighy Merry : Richard o'Callaghan Pippin : John McAndrew Legolas : David Collings Gimli : Douglas Livingstone Boromir : Michael Graham Cox Denethor : Peter Vaughan Faramir : Andrew Seear Theoden : Jack May Eomer : Anthony Hyde Eowyn : Elin Jenkins Saruman : Peter Howell Grima Wormtongue : Paul Brooke Elrond : Hugh Dickson Galadriel : Marian Diamond Celeborn : Simon Cadell Treebeard : Stephen Thorne Barleyman Butterbur : James Grout Farmer Maggot : John Bott Lord of the Nazgul : Phillip Voss Mouth of Sauron : John Rye and finally the Narrator : Gerard Murphy
There are 13 discs to the set, with a 14th containing the music. It was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on March 8th 1981, and lasted for 26 weeks. The recording lasts for 13 hours and 20 minutes. Each cd has its own title, and they are as follows. The Shadows of the Past. The Black Riders. The Knife in the Dark. The Ring Goes South. The Mirror of Galadriel. The Breaking of the Fellowship. The King of the Golden Hall. The Voice of Saruman. The Two Towers. The Choices of Master Samwise. The Battle of Pelennor Fields. Mount Doom. The Grey Havens.
All are full of life and have alot to offer the listener. Each has its own piece of the story to tell. I hope this has been a better review, see you all for now, Aussieme1106 xx

Advantages: True to a fantastic story, excellent actors, great music Disadvantages: Finding time to listen, might surprise those who only know the film
Advantages: A traditional narrative envoking a relaxed mood this audio collection remains true to the book Disadvantages: The over dramatic portrayal of Gollum would scare as many adults as children!
