a fantasy fan who hasn't read the gospel of the genre, JRR. Tolkien's definitive three-book epic, The Lord of the Rings (encompassing The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King), and its charming precursor, The Hobbit. That many (if not most) fantasy works are in some way derivative of Tolkien is understood, but the influence of The Lord of the Rings is so universal that everybody from George Lucas to Led Zeppelin has appropriated it for one purpose or another. Not just revolutionary because it was ground-breaking, The Lord of the Rings is timeless because it's the product of a truly top-shelf mind. Tolkien was a distinguished linguist and Oxford scholar of dead languages, with strong ideas about the importance of myth and story and a deep appreciation of nature. His epic, 10 years in the making, recounts the Great War of the Ring and the closing of Middle-Earth's Third Age, a time when magic begins to fade from the world and men rise to dominance. Tolkien carefully details this transition with tremendous skill and love, creating in The Lord of the Rings a universal and all-embracing tale, a justly celebrated classic. --Paul Hughes

Comprising the three novels that make up the Lord of the Rings sequence--The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King--the whole set is presented in matching matt black packaging with embossed runes and coloured rings. Of course, beneath the fancy covers lies a great epic story of good versus evil, perhaps one of the greatest stories ever told. Attractively presented--and at a great price--there really is no excuse not to have this in your collection. Description is good, but when you get too explaining every blade of grass to the last detail you may get bored. Even though i wanted to quit reading it so bad, i kept going because i know it does get better.
You go on this wonderful adventure with Frodo Baggins from Bag end. Along with Sam, his loyful companion. You meet loads of interesting characters on the way including, Tom who is like the god of all land, sea and sky in the area were he lives. And tom one day stumbles across the poor hobbits in a spot of bother and helps them out.
You also come across the great Gandalf the Grey. You don't see much of him in this book, but what you dont realise is that he has been very close all along.
And finally you meet the enemy, the black riders. Lifeless riders who rule for their evil master, and creator of the Ring. These riders are set out to kill Frodo and his friends and get the precious ring back to their master.
I urge you to read this book, and more important, dont give up. I admit, it gets really boring some times, but just keep reading and you wont regret it.
I hope i have helped at all.... Thanks for reading my short review :D
