Disadvantages: Not enough on the western states

But I do wonder whether his earlier work "The Lost Continent" (now 20 years old, amazingly) might not in fact be even better. ...he drives vast distances around the country of his birth in his mother's less-than-reliable old car: at one point it breaks down on a lonely, snowy mountain pass and you wonder just for a moment whether Bryson will start to thrash it as did Basil Fawlty all those years ago. At the time this book was written, Bryson had lived in the UK with his British wife for a decade (although he did later return to the US for a few years) . This meant that he ... more

Advantages: Funny, easy to read
Disadvantages: Occasional roars of laughter which can be embarrassing

...things first, this is in the travel book section, but it is NOT a guidebook, if you buy it as such you'll be very disappointed. The 'specific criteria' from ciao are therefore pretty pointless in this case. I'd never read any Bill Bryson until I went to Indonesia. He simply didn't appeal. I'd heard lots of good things about him, my Dad's got a few of the books so I didn't have to make the effort of getting to the library or buy one, and I'd read ...
...book choice was limited to the 4 books I'd been able to take over (20kg for 12 months is not much help), and the ones other teachers had taken and left. One of the past teachers had had a penchant for Bryson, so I gave him a go, once I'd pretty much exhausted the others which I fancied, and figured I wouldn't mind. I'm so pleased that I finally tried Bryson. The first book of his had me hooked on him. I don't often find myself actually giggling at ...

Reviews which might be of interest for "The Lost Continent - Bill Bryson"

I wouldn't read a four ecks by anyone else

Advantages: Frenetic pace, great one liners and parodies
Disadvantages: Previous knowledge of Discworld advantageous

A pun on, and inspired by Bill Bryson's "The Lost Continent, "The Last Continent" is Terry Pratchett's 22nd Discworld novel and I class it as one of his best. For the unaware among you Pratchett's Discworld is a strange blend of fantasy, humour and satire. Set on the Discworld; a flat, magical land were anything can happen and often does; this particular novel centres around Rincewind. A failed "Wizzard", he was accidentally transported by his more learned friends to "The Last Continent" or EcksEcksEcksEcks, a land whose location no one is sure off and some say it does not exist. This is one of my favourite novels for many reasons but the main one is the lack of plot. Perhaps, a bizarre thing to say but this book benefits from its loose plot outline, which covers the creation of a continent, evolution and stereotypes ...
