Board games have a few reasons to be played in my house, sometimes to stem the boredom but mainly to get the family together for an hour or so.
So over the years we have collected several board games such as the old fashioned and types of monopoly, scrabble, chess and others, with some more modern games such as this particular fun one that is called The Magic Tooth Fairy game which involves teeth, a bed and, obviously, a bit of magic to get money for you pearly whites.

This Magic Tooth Fairy game does have several piece with-in the box, with many of the pieces being a definite choking hazard for younger children, that’s why this game has got a recommendation of 5 years and above.

The bits inside the box are, or should be,
  • A round playing board
  • A bed with spinning arrow
  • A pillow
  • Dice (or cards)
  • Four plastic mouths
  • 16 white teeth
  • 4 coloured counters with ‘tooth’ holders on there backs
  • 13 gold coins

Before starting the game each player is given a tooth holder, which is in the shape of a mouth, and four teeth which slot into it, with the aim of the game being to move around the playing board in the hope of landing on the right squares so that you can swap your teeth for gold coins.

HOW IS IT PLAYED THEN..?

It’s a simple game to play, each player takes it in turn to spin the arrow on the bed, moving the number of spaces the arrow lands on.
If you land on a ‘wobbly tooth’ you take a tooth and places it on the rear of their playing piece, although this depends on the ‘wobbly tooth’ choice before hand, whether you pull the tooth or not. This is done by a roll of a dice, (or in other versions, a turn of a card
If you land on a ’go to bed’ space then, if they have a tooth on their playing piece, they take the tooth and place it in the bed, under the pillow, using the wand to ‘magic’ the tooth away, replacing it with a gold coin. Although if you land on a ’go to bed’ space but don’t have a tooth then you just end your turn and it’s the next players turn
If you land on a ‘spin again’ space you simply spin again.

That’s it, the aim of the game is that simple, to swap your four teeth in your mouth, (the plastic mouth and plastic teeth, not your real teeth as that would be a bit painful), for four gold coins by placing them under the pillow.

MY OPINION…

When we first played this game we all found it funny and, as it only takes a few minutes to play each game, it didn’t get boring at all.
It is a fun game to play, more a silly game than anything, giving me, and the kids, a chance to get our hands on a gold coin which magically appears when you put your tooth under the pillow.
Each game could last for a few minutes, depending on what spaces the player lands on, but we’ve played games that have never gone over ten minutes, unless one of us has had to leave the board for a reason, so the younger kids shouldn’t get bored as they do with those longer games.

Unfortunately, over the time we have played it the ‘fun-ability’ of the game has dwindled somewhat, with a bit of annoyance edging in when things don’t quite work as they should.
What I mean by that is that the bed itself has a tendency to trap the coins inside the mechanism, which is a bit annoying mid game as you have to tip the bed up and give it a bit of a shake, which results in coins and teeth dropping everywhere.
Then there’s the wand itself which has been ‘misplaced’ several times, forcing me to have to use a lollipop stick until we’ve come across the wand. I mean, why they couldn’t attach the wand to the side of the bed with a bit of string of something I don’t know?
But even with those couple of negative downsides we still play the game now but when we press the wand down into the head of the bed it is done with a little bit of care, slowly pushing down so that the tooth or coin doesn’t get jammed in the works, so all is not lost for a few minutes of fun.

What about the price? This sells for around the £15.00 which for me, now I have played the game and realised how temperamental it has been, is a few quid over the price I’d have paid.

In all it’s a fun game to play and will keep the younger children occupied and probably fascinated for a while, but do treat the fragile bed with a bit of compassion as it can easily jam up

"you have to tip the bed up and give it a bit of a shake, which results in coins and teeth dropping everywhere." Now that's not a line you often see written!!
