Set in the city of Imardin within the land of Kyralia, the story centers on a young girl called Sonea and her rise from the slums to acceptance within the magicians guild.

Cut off from her aunt and uncle in the press of poor people trying to escape the yearly purge of the city, Sonea learns that some old friends may be in trouble and goes to warn them.
In doing so she becomes caught up in their less than peaceful protest at being driven from their homes to live outside the city walls in the slums.

In her anger at being forced to move she joins them in throwing stones at the magicians - usually a useless gesture since they are warded against physical attack, but none are more surprised than she when her stone knocks her intended target to the ground.
This sets off a massive manhunt for the untrained magician loose in the slums because if she is not found and taught to control her newly discovered power she could destroy not just herself but take half the city with her when she goes.

The story does not end with her being found by the guild though, far from it, this is when the pace steps up a notch as the politics and machinations at work within the guild itself show the work of a shrewd mind and someone with an insightful grasp on the way people interact.

The writing style sucks you in and makes you as one with the story - completely oblivious to the world around you (so don't think of it as something to while away a journey because you may very well miss your stop!)
You will find it hard to put down, not just because the story itself is a cut above the norm, but because you just need to know what happens next. If you leave it at any point in order to sleep the characters will be dancing around your mind and invading your dreams because they are so convincingly written.

I would definitely recommend purchasing all three books before reading the first because you won't be able to stop yourself devouring them as quickly as possibe again and again.
