The 'Magician's Guild' is the first book in a superb trilogy by Trudi Canavan. The story starts with the magicians of Imardin, in Kyralia, attempting to purge the slum areas of the city. It is here that the main character, Sonea, is first noticed by the guild and quickly becomes their main priority.

After becoming involved with the crowd, Sonea releases her anger by throwing stones along with her fellows at the shielded magicians. Yet the unthinkable happens and her stone cuts through the magical barrier and hits her target squarely on the temple. Thus the incident provokes a city wide manhunt for the rogue magician, as, if the power within her is left untrained then she could well be a danger to herself and to the whole of Imardin.

Canavan's writing style is very engrossing and the characters are well written. The world she creates becomes wholly believable, with plot turns and character interaction adding to the lively pace of the novel. All this accumulates to form a book that is very hard to put down throughout the majority of the read. You will find yourself constantly wanting to know what is going to happen next in this well written and imaginative world.

With all three books now released I would suggest you purchase them all as you will want to read one after the other. This is definitely a trilogy that you will find you will want to read again.
