Advantages: easily obtainable, wide range of subjects
Disadvantages: not cheap compared to some book brands

...Dorling Kindersley have a fantastic range of Books, CD's etc. They use real pictures that are clear and fun to learn with. They have books for the smallest of children and have their own teddy bear character called "PB Bear" and he has his own range of video's, books, bath books, jigsaws, sticker books etc. DK products cover such a diverse range of subjects and is hard to not find a book on the subject that you are looking for. You find DK books everywhere, and often have special offers worth looking out for. Their encyclopaedia ranges and Eyewitness Guides are particularly good. I was a Senior Presenter for DK until the company was taken over recently and everybody who worked for the company from home were made redundant. This is a great shame as we were able to get a good discount for ourselves and offer discounts to friends.... Read review

Advantages: Real Marvel Universe? The art in the halloween story is amazing
Disadvantages: The interaction with the real universe is a bit contrived!

...I feel I should warn you, I have written a little about the series first in order to introduce each book so you can read them independently it feels like cheating but I promise its well intended! The Exiles are an offshoot of the original Age of Apocalypse story in the X-men comics. In essence it is similar to a science fiction TV show from years ago called Sliders, it has a little Quantum Leap and a touch of Marvels classic What If series (without the Watcher) Each of the original characters in the series are former X-Men, but from different universes. With a multi-verse of characters to select the headcount kill throughout the series is brutal, and the majority of the characters do not survive without some major trauma. With lots of independent stories that rarely depend on the other X titles, Exiles is a great standalone series... Read review

Advantages: Well written, lots of beautiful illustrations. Great for kids of all ages. A useful tool for supplementing school projects or as part of a home-school theme on ships.
Disadvantages: To do this book justice, you really need the time to examine each page carefully.

...in "Castle" are Defense and Seige, Garrison and Prisoners, Building The Castle and Living Like A Lord. Plenty in here to whet the appetite for mediaeval English history, methinks. Dorling Kindersley are about the best in quality children's publishing, their books tend to be factual and seem to last forever as far as interest level. Aimed at children, probably about 8-10 year olds (to use on their own) I have always found these books by Beisty and Platt to be interesting enough for adults too. I might say that I've bought this for my grand-children (for future use), but I'm the one who keeps poring over it right now, and it is marvellous. I am engrossed. These are absolutely brilliant to use in a home school curriculum, or to support school projects at home. In England, there are enough castles still standing to be able to provide... Read review
