I read the electronic version of the book, wich totals 75 pages and weighs in at just under 80,000 words making it a novel-length read. The personalities of the main characters have been re-inforeced and developed from the first book. Unlike many stories, and indeed many of the later books in the series, there are only 3 main characters in this plot, alongside Dirk and his co-conspirator Jeordino. The friendly banter between them adds character to the story, so it is not just all action and no humour. and what would Clive Cussler be without the usual romantic moments? also some will be disappointed by the only slight mention of this topic.
The story is set nearly entirely in the Eageian, and basically recounts the mystery of a drugs smuggling cartel operating under the sea. Starting as a simple hunt for a rare and thought-extinct breed of submarinal fish, this quickly turns into a death-defying race against time and probable death. Towards the end of the fic, the suspense that is built up is palpable, and the reader is truly left 'on the edge of his/her seat' wanting more and to see what will happen in the end.
Reading time for this fic is about four and a half hours non-stop, and is well worth it. Perfect for those long journeys, or for those simply wishing for a good read for some un-interrupted time.
