"The Nice Guys - Film Review"

Shane Black returns to the big screen with another action comedy starring Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling. An odd starring duo in my opinion but work so well together and together, the trio are able to deliver a fun and entertaining film sure to keep you laughing throughout. The Nice Guys is actually a nice surprise.

Russell Crowe – Jackson Healy
Ryan Gosling – Holland March
Angourie Rice – Holly March
Matt Bomer – John Boy
Margret Qualley – Amelia Kuttner
Yaya DaCosta – Tally
Lois Smith – Mrs Glenn
Murielle Telio – Misty Mountains

Set in 1977 Los Angeles, Holland March, private investigator, (Ryan Gosling) is hired to investigate the death of porn star Misty Mountains (Murielle Telio). His investigation leads to a lady named Amelia (Margret Qualley) who becomes distressed with Hollands constant questioning. Enter Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe), a short fused and impatient private eye hired by Amelia to keep Holland away. But when Amelia disappears, it becomes clear that Holland was not the only person looking for her. The 2 private eyes band together to uncover the reason behind the death of Misty Mountains and track down Amelia to find out. Accompanied by Hollands foul mouthed daughter, Holly, (Anguorie Rice) the trio encounter strippers, hitmen and goons to get to the bottom of this case.

I’m going to be honest I did not like the look of this film from the poster. It looked like some B movie I wouldn’t be interested in so I didn’t bother going to the cinema to see it. I saw this on DVD and regretted my decision instantly. It was actually a nice surprise and I enjoyed every second of it. Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling were brilliant in the film and managed to bounce off each other, both giving the film their individual comic relief, which is a strange thing to see Crowe do, but works so well. I was sceptical of this on screen duo as I had never seen them before but they worked well and made the film even better. I’ve never seen a film like it before, I thought the story and plot were original and funny, it was nice to see something refreshing rather than the usual hard hitting action or end of the world superhero film. Don’t get me wrong I love superhero films and hard actions but it’s nice sometimes to get a break from them.

Angourie Rice was a new actor for me and was hilarious in the film as a foul mouthed child, it would be nice to see her in more films in the future. Generally I thought the acting in the film was great, they were all able to create believable, likeable and empathetic characters, which makes the film really.
Cinematography and stunts in the film were good. Fight scenes and actions sequences were all coordinated very well and looked great on screen. We were able to get some good cinematography in scenes like that, but otherwise it was just the norm, but I can’t really fault the film for that as, like I said before, it’s not an over the top action or superhero film, so extensive and complicated shots and angles would’ve been pointless. I like the soundtrack and sound used in the film, typical late 70’s music and scores, which is nice to listen to as it gives the film a retro but cool feel to it.

This is a typical Shane Black film, action, comedy and lots of fun, which is why it’s a great entertainer. I wouldn’t go over the top and say it’s an amazing film, yes it is a very good film but if I had the choice between a superhero film or this, I would probably go for the superhero film… although after that I would come and see this. I feel a cinematic experience with this film would be a thrilling and entertaining ride, which is the only regret I have. Still, even on DVD and on my home cinema kit, it was still a fun movie.

Unfortunately the film did not do so well at the box office, making £36 million, not even making its budget of £50 million. I feel this was because people were not really prepared for this film, it just sort of appeared. Personally I didn’t see any posters, trailers or any promo for this film other than a poster on the bus. But hey ho, it was still a good film. It won awards such as Most Underrated Movie of the Year and Best Comedy Film in Las Vegas.

A great and entertaining film perfect for anyone with spare time or who just needs a good film to watch to get away from the usual common films coming out.

A great film. 4 stars.
