Advantages Advantages The story continues on from the magicians guild making Soneas story even more enjoyable!

Disadvantages Disadvantages In my eyes the book was too short lol!

Sonea is now about to take the oath of a novice at the acceptance ceremony. She knows coming from the slums that the other novices may not accept her at first as they are all from noble families. Little did she realise to what extent she would be pushed out. She is taunted and hated by her class mates, do they really wish to see her fail as much as they seem to want her to? Yes! Rothen (her guardian) and Dannyl try to help sonea as much as they can, but soon nasty rumors are spread involving sonea. This seems to be unbearable until the high lord Akkarrin steps in to take over soneas ... more

Advantages Advantages Easy to read, quite intriguing about the supernatural powers.

Disadvantages Disadvantages serious and may seem dull to some.

The Novice is the second book of the Black Magician Trilogy. The main character is Sonea, a girl in her teens who was found to have capabilities and powers. She was soon taken from the slums and enrolled for training in the Magicians' Guild. Just like all the other novices, Sonea was assigned to Rothen, the Guardian who is responsible to prepare her before entering the university of the magicians. Little does Sonea knows, practical training is not enough to survive when all her fellow classmates come from high-powered families, snobbish and are drawing an obvious line that she don't belong ... more

Advantages Advantages Follows on nicely from the first book, not a shoddy sequel.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Big cliffhanger and the third book wasn't out when I finished reading it.

Picking up after the events in The Magicians Guild, the story continues… Sonea is about to be initiated as a Novice and is understandably nervous. Not only does she have the more mundane concerns about how her fellow novices will treat her, but she also has to worry about the High Lord finding out that she knows about his practice of Black Magic. Very soon Sonea is embroiled in her studies, hampered at every stage by the attentions of her fellow students. They have taken exception to having a street dweller in their class and are determined to make life miserable for her. However these ... more

Advantages Advantages an all round brilliant book

Disadvantages Disadvantages the ending is a bit of a cliffhanger so you need the next book almost immediately .

Following on from book 1 of the trilogy (The magicians guild, isbn 1-84149-313-9) we pick up at pretty much the same place we left off. Sonea is about to become a novice in the magicians guild and is nervous about how she will be treated by her fellow novices due to the vast difference in their backgrounds - and rightly so. From day one of her studies she is hampered at every turn by petty pranks and vindictiveness leading to outright attacks by a gang of her 'peers'. Things take a darker and more sinister turn with the introduction of a series of murders within the slums that were once her ... more

    Advantages Advantages fascinating

Disadvantages Disadvantages can't put it down

I was surprised how enjoyable this book was as I expected it to suit youngsters more but it is one of the best books I have read this year. Throughout the trilogy there are many twists and sturns that all come together very well. I was hooked from page one and am even considering other Canavan books. The book reads easily and can also be quite funny at times. It's definitely worth a read, but be warned you will need to buy the whole trilogy at once as they get better and better and I became very impatient waiting for the 2nd and 3rd books to arrive. Good work! I can't wait to read the the ... more
