A Twisting Tale

Advantages: A gripping read if your into historical who dunit
Disadvantages: You should really read the first two books

Set in England in 1366, this, the third book, is a story of betrayal, intrigue, incest, 14th century war fare, resurrection and holy relics. There are nuns returning from the grave, freebooters, dubious ships captains and plain old murderers. Review of The Nun's Tale - An Owen Archer Mystery - Candace Robb

Just Another Mediaeval Murder

Advantages: The plot isn't bad
Disadvantages: No atmosphere

You will gather that I did not like this book. That isn't quite true. I read it quickly and almost enjoyed the read. I certainly wanted to know what would happen next, but that's the best I can say about it. I could have lived without finding out. First things first: what is the book about? It is the seventh "Owen Archer" mystery. It is the Spring of 1370. Owen Archer is a former captain of archers, latterly working as ...

Rosa gallica officinalis

Advantages: an enjoyable historical mystery
Disadvantages: makes you want to read the sequels

the heart and take away the shaking and trembling thereof". Not much new there then is there? Knowing all this it's hardly surprising that the same rose was often used as a symbol by mediaeval apothecaries. Candace Robb herself has an in-depth knowledge of herbs and has developed and planned her own herb garden along mediaeval principals. She has used her research and studies of old herbals, court transcripts, wills and inventories as well as referring to archaeoethnobiological studies to develop realistic and plausible lifestyles for Nicholas and Lucie Wilton, apothecaries in the white rose cathedral city of York. 'The Apothecary Rose', set in 1363, is the first of the Owen Archer mysteries. ~~0~~0~~ ~~0~~0~~ Not a thriller, this novel is an easy and quick-to-read mystery, with a romantic touch, that keeps you guessing throughout ...
