I recently purchased one of the Sony Walkman phones the W300i on Orange as it was such a good deal and came with mini speakers worth £30.
The phone itself retails for £89.99 and you have to add £10 airtime when you buy.
Now before I purchased this phone, I bought, by mistake, a Motorola (which I had for a day) and started the process of "porting" my number across from another network which I told them in the shop and that I was prepared to pay the extra £60 for the W300i but obviously wanted to keep the SIM for the number porting. This then opened a can of worms!
They sold me the W300i and said that I could keep the original SIM and give me another SIM.
I then got a phone call from Orange Customer Services saying I had to return to the store because the SIM I originally had had been blocked and everything had to be transferred to the new SIM that I got with the W300i.
I went back (fuming, I hasten to add!) whereupon they set about transferring all my data etc. to this new SIM that was supplied with the W300i. Great, I thought............. no such luck.
Following day I used the phone only to get a message come up on my screen "Inactive SIM", well all hell broke loose!
I went back to the shop who said "Didn't customer services phone you?", to which I replied "No, they didn't". They then told me that they had to sell me a brand new handset with a brand new SIM and have (again!) everything tranferred to this new SIM.
Basically what had happened was, when they transferred all the information from one SIM to another the "trainee" at customer services "forgot" to press the "finish" key!
Now the only thing I was worried about was my number being ported. I didn't want to loose it. By this time I was very, very angry and said that I wanted some form of compensation. From buying the Motorola to exchanging the phone 3 times I'd been back to the shop 4 times!!! This time I was seen by the manager, he was very apologetic and offer to give me a Sony Ericsson Bluetooth headset (worth about £30, so I wasn't complaining). He took all my details down and said that it would take 5-10 mins to complete, I said that I had to go back to the office and could someone drop it off for me, which he replied that they could. An hour later, I had to phone the shop to see where it was!
**OUTCOME**
I eventually, after 4 days and a few hours on the last day, I eventually got a brand new handset and my number was eventually ported over on the day they said.
Orange is one of the best networks around, launched in April 1994 and by July 1997 had 1 million customers. By October 1999 Orange was sold to Mannesmann AG and now operates in countries such as Switzerland and Belgium and has sold licences to countries such as India and Israel.
From its humble beginnings in 1994 to now it covers most of the UK and has a very good reception.
The Orange shops have staff that are highly trained "phone trainers" and have all the up to date knowledge of their phones and tarrifs. Each shop is more or less set out the same and they also have a wide range of accessories.
