The Palace Downtown Dubai

July rolls around, we had our holiday to Ibiza already booked for August, Mr B says “Shall we go back to Dubai in October half term”, well of course there was only one answer.

October half term 2017
2 adults
The Palace Downtown Dubai
Room Only- Fountain View
5 nights
£1500 (you only live once right?!)
(Flights not included)

The Hotel Decision Process

So Mr B gets to work on his usual research when deciding what hotel we should stay in. During our last trip to Dubai we had a boat ride along the fountains, where we saw a hotel and thought that would be a lovely place to stay. This was the hotel we decided on, paying to upgrade to a fountain view room. (Approx. £300 extra)

The hotel is rated as a 5* hotel, and is situated on Dubai Fountains which is opposite the Burj Khalifa, next to Dubai Mall, so plenty of attractions in walking distance!
The hotel is part of ‘The Address’ hotel group who own a few hotels in Dubai.

First Impressions

The taxi ride from the airport to the hotel took around 20minutes. There is a long driveway up to the hotel and then you are welcomed into the hotel. It has a lovely grand entrance with water fountains both in and leading up to the hotel. It has a lovely, relaxed feel about it as you enter. There is a gorgeous chandelier hanging in the reception area, along with a water feature filled with pink petals. It definitely had a ‘palace’ feel about it on arrival. We were planning on doing a few trips while we were here, so it was good to see plenty of taxis lined up on the driveway to the hotel.

Check In

The staff members were very friendly, taking our details, asking about our flights etc. We were staying at the hotel on a room only basis, she did ask us if we wanted to include breakfast which we declined. She then told us about a rewards card which would allow us to get 10% off drinks and food in the hotel restaurants, this came in very handy! We arrived at around 8.30am, check in was not until 3pm, but she said our room could be ready in 1 hour. We decided to sit around the reception and wait for our room. We were offered refreshments while we were waiting. We could have had a wander around the hotel at this point but we were feeling very tired so decided to just sit and wait! Around an hour later she came with our room cards and a porter who showed us to our room. The reception is on the 3rd and top floor of the hotel, our room was on the 2nd floor, we took the lift down, walked a few corridors and then we were there.

The Room

You walk in to a large and bright room, there was a desk on the right, the tv and table on the left, a large bed, 2 chairs and then the balcony. The bathroom is located next to the desk on the right side.

The Balcony

I love a good balcony when on holiday so I am going to start with this aspect of the room. We had paid extra to upgrade to a fountain view room. As we opened the sliding doors to lead onto the balcony we had a wonderful view…of palm trees. We had read reviews about this before we had arrived, and other people had said that they obstruct the view of the fountains. And they were right. However we could partially see the fountains, and not being ones to complain we made the best out of a bad situation. We could see the fountains and looking around at the other balcony’s, they also seemed to have partial views too. My top tip would be to try and ask for a ground floor room as we think that these had the best fountain views! Unless you want to upgrade to the luxury room which does have a complete view of the fountains. Even though we were slightly disappointed with our view we didn’t let it spoil our holiday and we regularly sat out on the balcony watching the fountains.

Mr B says- ‘It’s not a fountain view’

The Room

Putting the balcony aside, the room was very nice. The bed was large and comfortable with a variety of pillows. There was a mini fridge, we chose not to use the contents as these had a high price tag but we did use the fridge to keep the complimentary water in. One of my favourite features of this room was the desk. At first it seemed to be just a plain brown desk but on further investigation you can open the desk up to reveal a mirror and a storage space underneath! It also had a side compartment which had plug sockets! This was a great place to keep all of my mess hidden under for when the cleaners came in!

Another feature of the room is that it came with its own IPad and docking station. This had all the hotel information on and allowed you to book reservations at the hotel restaurants and other restaurants which had been recommended. We did use this to book a reservation at the hotels Thai restaurant and it was very straight forward.
The room was great, it had everything you needed and more. Tea/Coffee facilities, plenty of wardrobe space, mirrors, plugs, huge bed, air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, iron etc. etc.

The Bathroom

This was also very nice. It had a large rain shower which was very powerful and the temperature was just right. It also had a nice bath, we didn’t use this but it seemed a good size! 2 sinks and the toilet. The shower and the toilet were behind two further doors. There were complimentary toiletries, toothbrushes, combs, dressing gown, slippers, which were all very nice. Plenty of towels and toilet rolls too! As bathrooms go it was fit for purpose!

Mr B says- ‘nice and big’.

The Pool

The pool is located on the ground floor of the hotel. It has sunbeds, gazebos and umbrellas situated around the pool. There is a children’s pool and then the main pool. There are also plenty of palm trees down the length of the pool which are all lit up at night time which looks wonderful. The sunbeds are comfortable and the waiters were quick to come and help you with your towels. Due to the hotel being surrounded by high rise buildings (this is Dubai!) and the palm trees, you had to think tactically about where to position yourself if you wanted the sun or shade. On one side of the pool would mainly be in the shade all day and the other side would be in the sun around 1pm. The sunbeds at the bottom of the pool would have the benefit of both the sun and shade. This is where we positioned ourselves if it wasn’t busy. During the morning it was easy to get a sunbed, if you go around the pool in the afternoon then this becomes harder to find a sunbed, however the waiters will try their best to get you a sunbed. (I’m really trying hard not to mention the 2 greedy sunbed hoggers who thought it was acceptable to have 2 sunbeds in the sun, 2 sunbeds in the shade and a gazebo! They did not annoy us at all!)

The pool was not deep, I’m 5’2ish and I could easily stand up which is just how I like it! The pool was refreshing to get in to and then just right to swim a few lengths up and down. It was never overly busy in the pool, so there was a nice relaxing atmosphere around the pool. Around mid-morning the waiters would come round with a refreshing complimentary fruit juice, just before lunch they would come around with a wet towel to freshen up with and during the afternoon they would come round with some ice cream or fruit! We were well taken care of!

Just behind the sunbed areas are two seating areas overlooking the water. This is one of the restaurants at night, but you can also order here for lunch. The lunch menu is good, lots of choice and you can either choose to eat on your sunbed or at the tables.

Right behind the pool area is a fantastic view of the Burj Khalifa! A great view when you are swimming up and down the pool, making sure you can’t forget you are in Dubai!
Overall, we spent a couple of days lazing around the pool and thoroughly enjoyed it.

The Food

As we were staying on a room only basis I cannot comment on the breakfast selection. The lunch menu by the pool was very nice, including things such as salads, wraps, burgers and pizzas. During the evening the hotel has 3 restaurants- one being an Argentina Steak House, one being an Arab Restaurant and the 3rd being a Thai Restaurant. We decided to eat out most nights but we chose to spend our last night at the Thai Restaurant.

We were really looking forward to eating here as we had read great reviews. We used our in room IPad to make a reservation for 7.30pm. It stated on the iPad information section that if you wanted to sit outside with a view of the fountains then there is a minimum spend. This is a very romantic spot and would be perfect for anyone wanting to propose! (Tut, too late for Mr B!) There is also smart dress code.

The food here was delicious! There was a good selection on the menu, both meats and seafood choices, and plenty of sides too! The atmosphere was very relaxed and staff were very helpful. The restaurant got busy so definitely worth making a reservation! Even if you are seated inside, there are glass windows all around so you still have a lovely view of the fountains!
It didn’t quite make our top 2 of our favourite meals during our time in Dubai, but it did come close! We paid around £130, for 2 starters, 2 main meals, 1 side and 2 drinks! So considering we were in Dubai the price is actually quite reasonable for what we had! (This did include 10% off with the reward card that we were handed at reception! We definitely didn’t forget to bring it down to the restaurant with us, and Mr B definitely didn’t have to run back to the room before the bill came!)
This really was a perfect last meal for our time in Dubai!

Overall

We did have a fantastic time staying in the Palace hotel. It is definitely the location which would sell it again for me. I loved having the option of walking to the mall and the other main attractions. However, would I stay here again? Probably not, our main reason for staying here was for the Fountain View room, we wouldn’t pay extra to upgrade again, so we would look for a different hotel. We would stay here if the price was right but it would have to be hugely discounted! In our perfect world the building work which was surrounding the Taj hotel would be finished, and we would be able to walk to the mall from there, making the Taj hotel our overall winner!

Mr B says- ‘Nice but I prefer the Taj’.
