I don’t read books very often, as I don’t get a lot of time (although I always seem to have time for a movie). But I usually end up reading a good book in the summer. I have a few favourite authors whose books I know will turn out well and prefer reading. Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park, E.R, Prey) & John Grisham (Runaway Jury, A Time to Kill, The Firm) are two of the best authors around at the moment. And I would recommend their books to anyone.
Today I am focusing on John Grisham’s – “The Partner”. One thing John & Michael have in common is the fact that a lot of their books have been turned into movies. And earlier this year Grisham’s “Runaway Jury” hit the big screen. I went to watch this film and it reminded me of how great Grisham’s books are, and how intriguing they become. So as soon as I went home (or a few months later) I decided to pick up a good Grisham book and my sister recommended “The Partner” to me.
The story starts with the capture and torture of Patrick S. Lannigan, a lawyer who four years earlier faked his own death & stole ninety million dollars from his old law partners and clients. “Where is the money?” is the question on every ones tongue. Soon after the F.B.I who are also looking for Patrick are tipped that he has been caught and want him. When they obtain custody of Patrick he is half dead, badly burnt, as he was tortured only a few hours before hand. Because of these circumstances he is kept at a hospital back in the small town he once called home four years earlier. He must now find a way to get out of this predicament, because as soon as he starts to recover he faces murder charges, people want him dead & others want their money back, and don’t mind going to extreme lengths to retrieve it.
Before his face is plastered all over the news, the F.B.I let his mother his old partners and “widowed” wife know that he is still alive and they have him. Soon after everybody knows. When Patrick “died” he left behind his friends and family that included a wife and a young daughter who was two. His wife got over the death quickly as she was rewarded four million dollars in life insurance, which the insurance company will sue for. As the story develops there are three questions that you and everyone else want the answers to;
1. Where is the money? 2. Whose body did he substitute for his own? 3. How did he do it?
All questions are answered in good time. The money is safe somewhere in the world, untouched and only one person knows the whereabouts of it; Eva Miranda or Leah Pires (depending on which identity she is using) also a lawyer. The one person he told about his past once he changed his identity, he trusts her with his life and she is the only other person that knows the answers to the above questions. Everything that she knew, from transferring money to different accounts to loosing someone that is following you, she learnt from Patrick, and she is the only person that can help him.
This in mind he still needs a lawyer he can trust to help him now, he decides to call Sandy an old friend that attended law school with him, but had slowly lost contact with over the years. Sandy was the kind of guy that he could trust and there were very few people he could trust now. With his charm knowledge & meticulous planning he manages to sway even the smallest things his way, like not going to prison and staying at a guarded hospital whilst recovering. As the story develops it becomes clear that he had been planning on stealing the money and faking his death for over a year before he pulled the stunt. So you can imagine how well every thing was thought out. Now all he has to do is get all the charges against him dropped.
The story is very clever as you come to learn how he pulled it all off, and the conclusion to the book. There are a few story lines that you bounce around in the book; what his ex-wife and her lover are going to do about the money they are going to loose. How Eva Miranda is going to avoid the men looking for her and the money, and the main story line; Patrick Lannigan.
As you delve deeper into the book, it becomes clear that Patrick has an eye for detail and almost every move made by him has been planned well ahead. The story does unravel it self as you go on and at the perfect moment everything is revealed.
John Grisham is a law novelist. All his books have some thing or other to do with American law, and you’d be amazed how many different aspects there are. From racial cases to dodgy law firms to a child witness he covers quite a bit of territory. Each book is well researched which is nothing less then what you would expect from an author. Every thing is beautifully detailed to create an image in your head.
One thing I’ve noticed about Grisham’s books; there isn’t any page that you want to skip; because there is too much detail or useless information that you couldn’t really be bothered to read, your mind never wonders away from the pages. Do you ever get that? When you’re reading but you’re not listening to yourself, you’re just reading for the hell of getting through that page, but in your head you’re really thinking – “I wonder how Ed Norton is going to propose to me?” (Or any other thought…that’s just me.)
“And they all lived happily ever after?” that’s a question you will have to answer yourself by reading the book. I would recommend this book to anyone. Every one should know by now that Grisham is a great author and this book does not let you down. It really is a page-turner, and because there are so many questions that you want answers to, you keep reading to find out what happens.
This book is available in any good library and bookstore that has a copy of this book. If they don’t have a copy of this book then it is not available there. It is also available on Amazon if they have a copy, if they don’t then its not available there… do you see the pattern here?
Advantages: Another easy flowing Grisham book Disadvantages: A few slight Plot Holes
Well the next Grisham book I come to is The Partner and despite what some people seem to think no he’s not paying me (although any cash would be much appreciated). He seems to be an author who sticks to a set and regiment style but he makes this style work well. Although the subject matter probably doesn’t appeal to everyone, Grisham has a way of drawing you into the book.

This time the story focuses on Patrick Lanigan a promising young partner within a high profile law firm. He has it all a lovely wife, a new born child and a long career ahead of him but when he is killed in a car crash all this has gone. Weeks later after his funeral almost 90 million dollars is stolen from his old companies offshore bank account and this is when they realise that Patrick isn’t actually dead.
It would appear that he faked ...

Story
The general storyline is about a partner of a corrupt firm who runs away after faking his own death. He takes $90 million with him and moves around and finally settles in Brazil. He is going by the name of Danilo (or Danny Boy) at he start but is really Patrick Lanigan. A consortium of businessmen, who have employed an investigation group to get him and the money, catches him. The group consists of Benny Aricia, and other ... ...(or Leah) who acts as the person who wires the money around the world. He is captured and tortured by the consortium before the FBI saves and arrests him. He is then faced with murder, for killing a person to put in his car-wreck, in which he faked his own death. He is also being sued for $90 million, the money he stole and is being divorced by his wife. Overall the story may seem complicated and is, however it can be better understood when you actually ...

Advantages: An excellent read that will have you reading into the small hours Disadvantages: none
The Story ************** Patrick lanigan has died in a car crash. Before that he was living the American dream, nice big house, attractive wife and the trappings of successful business. The only problem is that at the time of his death $90 million went missing from the company he worked for. Lanigan is really alive but he is soon tracked down and brought back to face justice. Thats where Lanigan uses his cunning to hire a lawyer to help get him off ... ...working as page by page the story builds into an unbelievable climax. This is not a book you can just switch off and read, and some people may find it heavy going. My advice is to stick with it, as the ending is worth it. There is a lot of pages used to go in to the details of American law but they are worth wading through. The scary thing is, that what happens to Lanigan, and what he does could be possible. With each charge against him falling away ...

Advantages: the description of the feelings Disadvantages: the unlogical story
This is the slogan of the John Grisham’s 1997 novel “the Partner” in the Arrow edition. And what does it hide behind this phrase?
Well, I can answer this question with another question like the people living in Galicia: Do you have enough brave to leave your parents and friends and to start a new life with new name by simulating your death? That is what Patrick S. Lanigan, an ex-partner in a law- firm in Biloxi, had done in February ... ...leave his own family. Nevertheless, the principal reason why he wanted to disappear was his own law- firm. The four partners of the law- firm wanted to fire Patrick on account of one name: Benny Aricia. He was Patrick Lanigan’s client and was known as a corrupted man. Benny had overrun several companies and had simulated that in his companies there were many workers who did not exist. The result of this corruption was that Aricia earned 90 ...

They found him in a small town in Brazil, near the border with Paraguay. He had a new name, Danilo Silva, and his appearance had been changed by plastic surgery. The search had taken four years. They'd chased him around the world, always just missing him. It had cost their clients three and a half million dollars. But so far none of them had complained. The man they were about to kidnap had not always been called Silva. Before, he had another life, a life which ended in a car crash in February 1992. His gravestone lay in a cemetry in Biloxi, Mississippi. His name before his death was Patrick S. Lanigan. He had been a partner at an up and coming law firm. He had a pretty wife, a new daughter, and a bright future. Six weeks after his death, $90 million had disappeared from the law firm.
