An End Has A Start - Editors

Advantages: Lyrically strong and musically very promising.
Disadvantages: It just isnt as great as their first album.Songs start firey but fizzle out too soon.

With their brilliant debut album The Back Room, it was clear that Editor's had the musical gravitas to craft another equelly compelling second album. But in my opinion, they didn't. For those of you that haven't heard Editor's then their sound is something like Interpol (vocally) and are definitely neo-post-punk musically. Guitars surge at the beginning of most songs aiming for something breathtakingly brilliant...trouble is that they never quite seem to get there. The songs some how begin to slump after the initial promise they offer. The lyrics are still thought provoking and moody, delivered perfectly by the direct and edgy vocals and the music is definitely better than most bands of a similar genre but for me it just doesn't quite cut the mustard. Especially when I am certain that this band could do so much better. But having ...

STILL the Bible of Pop.

Advantages: A wealth of information; user friendly; outstanding value for money and interesting articles too.
Disadvantages: A very minor gripe - the lack of a dedicated 'uk number 1's' section.

the year of publication than the Guinness editions ever were. For instance, the Guinness edition for say 1998 would only list the singles up to December 1997. I am very pleased that the Virgin edition which was published in 2008 is current up to April 2008. The Virgin Book is extremely user friendly, is a nice compact size and has a fantastic editor in Martin Roach who has written some excellent articles featured within the book about moments in the British chart history which caused a shift including the Sex Pistols and the battle between Blur and Oasis in the mid-90s. For ABBA fans there is a very nice piece about ABBA conveniently placed in the book just before the ABBA entries. The introduction by Roach is also excellent and well worth a read; Roach writes a witty but objective account about the current issues affecting the british ...

The Back Room - Editors

Advantages: 2 great tracks - Blood, and Munich
Disadvantages: Very disappointing tracks

This debut album by West Midlands band 'The Editors' was pretty disappointing, despite a number of critics claiming otherwise. MUNICH, and BLOOD are nice songs, and are a bit like 'Slow Hands' by Interpol. It's indie, but with a bit of an 80's 'New Order' / 'Joy Division' guitar sound coupled with 'Interpol' Both tracks seem to follow the same musical recipe, and this is something I'll get onto later. They are more or less copies of each other, with a catchy guitar in the background as the singer repeats the same lyrics over and over. With these 2 tracks it works well, and they are definitely worth a listen. But the spark runs out by the 4th track. There is nothing as good as MUNICH or BLOOD on the rest of the album. The other tracks are really quite boring and lack any catchy tune. Something was missing, and I think it was ...
