Advantages aptivating Prose, varied characters, intresting storyline, attention-grabbing descrpitons,

Disadvantages some parts leave you depressed

I have always been intrigued by the life and times of Oscar Wilde. His works are unique in more ways than one. He writes amazingly well. There is so much to learn from his writings. Poet, Playwright, Writer – he wore many hats. “The Picture of Dorian Gray” is undoubtedly one of Wilde’s best works.

It touches issues like vanity, hedonism, debauchery, self-indulgence. It is the story of Dorian Gray – a good-looking wealthy man who is also naïve and easily manipulated. He is highly influenced by Lord Henry – a self-indulgent cynical dandy who believes in pursuing a hedonistic lifestyle. The story revolves around a painting which is basically a reflection of Dorian’s sins. The portrait ages with each sin that Dorian commits. He commits various sins and gets into the habit of distancing himself from the blame.

For instance, he perceives Sibyl Vane’s suicide as a work of art than his own fault. The portrait is painted by Basil Hallward – the man who has a wild adoration for Dorian. He is actually infatuated with Dorian. He starts to believe that Dorian’s beauty will help him embark on a new journey in his life. Influence is a dominant theme throughout the book.

It seems that Wilde could relate to all the characters in the book. He had a little bit of the protagonist Dorian Gray, artist Basil Hallward and Lord Henry as well. It is a known fact that all creative people draw inspiration from real life. They draw from their personal experiences. It helps them deliver better.

The Picture of Dorian Gray had me engrossed. All in all, an impressive tale of corruption, vice, greed, beauty, etc. However, it could have been longer. The story could have been stretched. Also, some parts leave you depressed.
