Advantages: Short, easy to read. Disadvantages: Wilde's only published novel.

Dorian Grey realizes that after all his indulgences, he loses all things that were seemingly important to him.
In my opinion 'The Picture of Dorian Grey' by Oscar Wilde is a classic worth reading. I would recommend it for everyone, as it is not too difficult to read or very long. It gives the reader a perfect representation of 19th Century England, letting the reader's imagination run wild in places ranging from the elegant English countryside to the dark opium dens of East London.
Advantages: A truly original imitation... Disadvantages: A nasty world awaits you...
"Dorian" is the latest in an increasingly impressive line of Will Self novels, although the author himself chose to refer to it as an ?imitation?.

Firstly there has been a helpful if mediocre opinion about it here on Ciao recently by someone-or-other (clears throat: ahem, and shuffles feet?) and secondly because there is only so much you need to know about ?Picture? to make sense of what is a very loose imitation indeed. Namely that Wilde had the beautiful Dorian not aging at all as he fell into more and more debauchery and bad ways, culminating in nothing less than murder: whilst the once attractive ...

Ciao members have rated this review on average: very helpful Review of Dorian - Will Self
Advantages: Beautiful prose and wondering story-telling. Disadvantages: None
If you were to think of the classic horror stories of the nineteenth century, I am sure you would be in mind of?say, Dracula or Doctor Jeckle and Mr Hyde. You will think the names Poe and Lovecraft. Some of you might even think of OscarWilde and ?The Picture of DorianGrey.? Grey by the way seems to be spelt both as Grey and Gray! This is the book that I had promised myself I would read at least five years ago, and now I have done just that. But was it worth it; is it the classic it is merited as being?
The first sketches to be put on the canvas that is ?The Picture of DorianGrey? are an introduction to three main characters. Three friends, all of different personalities? to begin with anyway. We have the young, naïve Dorian of the title, sitting for a portrait by top artist Basil Hallward and we have Lord Henry Wotton. Basil has ...
