The Puppet Show is a great book which has been written based on the children's television series Balamory. The front cover of the book is a nice bright pink colour with a picture of Archie and a robot and he name Balamory above this in nice bright coloured letters and below the picture is the name of the book in blue bubble letters. At the top of the cover there is a picture showing some of the houses in the Balamory town.
The back ... ...a square in the middle which is a slightly different pink colour and has lots of balloons at the top and a description of the story below these.
The book is a paperback edition but the cover is made of very strong shiny card which does make is a bit stronger and less easy to rip.

THE STORY
The book starts in the same way as the television show with us seeing Miss Hoolie. She says hello to us and tells us what the weather is Balamory is like today, she tells us that it is windy. Miss Hoolie then finds a sock in her cupboard which she says must belong to Archie as he is always loosing things.
Miss Hoolie is then sitting at her desk when her computer screen goes off and the lights go out. She realises that there must be a power cut and that everything which needs electricity to work will not be able to be used. She says that the children will be sad as they wont be able to watch their favourite programme on the television. As Miss Hoolie is telling the children about the power cur Archie arrives. He says he has come to play them his new CD. Miss Hoolie says that he wont be able to because the wind has caused a power cut, she also tells him that the children cannot watch their favourite television show. Archie says that this is no problem and he will invent a television for the children to watch which does not need electricity to work. Archie then says he is off to the show.
In the corner of the page there is a little bubble with a picture of Miss Hoolie inside asking 'which coloured house do you think Archie is going to?'
MY OPINION
This is a great book which has been based on the very popular children's television show. The story has been laid out in the same way as the show with the characters being the same and the question which the book asks us also being the same as in the show.
The book has been written in nice and simple words which makes the story way for even young listeners to follow and understand. The book also has nice bright illustrations on every page which help to tell the story and I also find that they help to keep my 3 year old interested in the book and not to wonder off and do something else.
The illustrations have been done using cartoons images of the characters from the television show which I feel is very appropriate as sometimes when real photographs are used it makes the book seem slightly boring as the colours are not always as bright as they are in cartoons.
At the end of the book we have Miss Hoolie giving us a brief description of what has happened in the story which is also what happens in the television show, I find this is very helpful as it reminds my boys about what we have just been reading about and it also gives me the chance to ask them questions and to see if they can remember what happened in the story.
The writing which has been used in the book is a very good size so this is a brilliant book for new readers to try and read on their own. The characters have all got their original names so this will help the reading of the names, which can be tricky for new readers to read much easier.
INFO
The book was written based on the BBC Children's television show and was published in 2004 by Red Fox. The retail price for the book is £3.99 but I got my boys their copy from my local independent book shop for £2.50 which is a great price.
There are a few other title available in the Balamory book collection so be sure to watch out for them. If you would like any further information on this book then please visit www.kidsatrandomhouse.co.uk
I recommend this book for all Balamory fans.
I am reviewing the paperback edition of this book and not the audio as Ciao have listed it.
