On January 8th, 1997, BBC Radio 1 broadcast a special hour (called ChangesOneBowie) of exclusive semi-acoustic performances (recorded in New York) of classic Bowie tracks together with best wishes for Bowie from other musicians.
There aren't too many David Bowie interviews I've heard on audio format that have actually been interesting. They seem to lack something, perhaps it's the bland production skills or the same questions that Bowie gets asked over and over again through the years, by interviewers who have a problem with their voice, i.e. monotonous and boring. So when I listened to the BBCs Radio 1 Bowie birthday special, (kindly supplied to me by the woman who ruffled David's hair), needless to say I was pleasantly surprised.
ChangesNowBowie was conducted by english DJ Marianne Hobbs (sp?), who managed to maintain maximum attention levels by her enthusiastic approach to Bowie, by starting off the interview saying David Bowie "looks absolutely gorgeous", and by having the nerve to ask some lighthearted yet personal questions Who was hitting on you at the time, girls or boys? What was the worst sexually transmitted disease and who gave it to you? What sort of combination of drugs were you taking? Some of the answers are surprising, I don't believe that David couldn't get any sex in the seventies (LOL), and I'm not sure whether to believe he doesn't drink alcohol anymore.
The focus of the special was of course on David Bowie turning 50. To celebrate, Bowie was given the opportunity to listen to 10 celebrities wish him a happy birthday and ask him various questions. Some comments were amusing: Bono from U2, "The world should queue up to kiss your arse" - Shaun Ryder (Black Grape), "You're a cool dude man" - Mick Hucknell (Simply Red), "Hello you cockney git..".
Some were your average straight questions: Robert Smith (The Cure), "Why did you change your name" - Damon Albarn (Blur), "Why don't you write a musical"...and of course there was the obligatory bisexual question provided by Neil Tennant.
However the one message that really hit a chord with Bowie and myself as I listened, was the very touching one delivered by Scott Walker. Now I don't know much about Walker but it's obvious the man has the heart of a poet, he spoke with such eloquence that his words alone moved David deeply: "Have a wonderful birthday, and by the way, mine's the day after yours, so I'll have a drink to you - on the other side of midnight...how's that?" Judging by David’s reaction it is obvious to see that he views Walker as his peer. So how about an album together? :)
The questions and David's sometimes evasive answers were very enjoyable to listen to and humorous, note the comment about his bum! You can read the full transcript from Grant Wallace. The most exciting aspect of this special however, were the nine songs Bowie recorded exclusively for Radio 1.
As part of the hype for ChangesNowBowie, we were told that Bowie will perform a surprising acoustic set...and surprising it is! Most of these songs Bowie hasn't touched in a very long time and speaking as a true Bowiephile, these renditions are great!! The one thing that is noticeable on all these tracks are David's superb vocals. On songs like Quicksand and The Supermen,
Bowie has done away with his familiar croon which works well in other areas but would seem out of place on these songs. I've always been impressed with the number of vocal characterisations he can use in his songs to convey an atmosphere...and these songs are no exception.
I hope you like reading my interview with Bowie. Please do contact me for behind the scene's questions and answers....
Advantages: just all round good hearted fun Disadvantages: sometimes Sarahs quotes can be quite cutting
...that Sarah Cox I calling the shots so to speak. Her close to line witty remarks make waking up worth it.
The music played on the show I think has improved over the last 10 weeks or so in that now it plays more alternative/indie music. This I think is because people are finally seeing the light and are deciding that dance music is not as hot as it was last year and is as it always has been in my view toooooooooo repetitive. I mean don’t get ... ...For example whilst driving in the car I prefer to have some more easy listening music than the likes of sash. There is a time and place for dance music like when you are in a night club or party when you are out on the pull strutting your stuff on the dance floor.
The breakfast show I find to be highly entertaining for example they do this thing Challenge Chappers where the sports news reader Mark Chappman is challenged by Sarah to answer this question. ...

Advantages: Saves electricity - can make you turn your radio off Disadvantages: see all of the above
...recognise these phrases from outside The Simpsons – you will know that this op is all about Radio 1’s Breakfast Show D.J. – Sara Cox. I have tried, god knows I have, but I really cannot bring myself to like her style of presenting, I find it annoying, inane and very, very childish. It’s just not the kind of thing that I would like to listen to first thing in the morning. I know what you are thinking, “Well don’t ... ...it. Maybe today will be the day that I “get it”, and convert. I know more about this woman than I do most of my friends. She repeatedly tells us she’s from Bolton, she’s seeing a guy called John, she used to date a guy from The Prodigy, she’s got a dog called Snoop – and just incase you may forget any of these things, she tells us all of the above at least four or five times a programme. I cannot honestly think ...

Advantages: Stupid, amateur sounding at times Disadvantages: Stypid, very funny at times
The Breakfast Show on Radio One is usually the one radio show I hear bits of without fail. And I must say that, on balance I think that Sara Cox isn't doing a bad job, now that she's had over a year doing the job.
I watched the Girly Show on TV, which made a big thing of taking the unknown Boltonian to 'stardom'. The show was useless, and Sarah came across as very amateur on it, especially when interviewing celebrities. Mind you, a chaotic feel ... ...somehow.
Anyway, back to the Radio show. The music, first - she doesn't really seem to give a toss about the music she's playing, but then Radio One DJ's (prime time ones, anyway) nowadays don't seem to be expected to do such a thing. I like some of the music (the indie rather than the pop / dance), but it often seems incidental to the show.
One thing I did like was when she played a Status Quo track (Down down, I think it was), now this is a band ...

...listened to Radio 1, especially the breakfast show - l can go right back to when Simon Mayo was at the helm. I'll be the first to admitt that l was a huge Zoe Ball fan (still am - reckon shed be ace on a girls nite out!) so l was bias against Sara Cox when she first took over (approximately 12 months ago). I do think that she is probably more of a blokes woman than a girls girl if you know what l mean, but l must say she has grown on me. Without ... ...the opinion that she is down to earth with her feet firmly on terra ferma.
I did read some of the other opinions on her brekkie show and to be honest the poor girly has been slated. It did take her a while to gain her stride but now she is doing fine. She has her team around her - Fletch (new reader), Sara (broadcast assistant), Hannah (producer) & Chappers (sports monkey) and they do seem to gel very well like a family.
Now and again she does ...

Advantages: Sara Cox sometimes goes on holiday Disadvantages: Sara Cox is there most of the time
I only started listening to the Radio one Breakfast show on a day to day basis in the Zoe Ball era, this was about the same time i got a stereo with a built in timer for the radio to try and wake me up, hmm, strange coincidence there!
I have to say i did really enjoy the Zoe Ball Breakfast show, she was funny, had good ideas and i know its not actually the fault of Sara Cox but i think the Radio 1 playlist was better then (even though Chris Moyles ... ...came along however i think the show in general took a turn for the worse.
Generally when a new DJ takes over a radio show the show changes all together and brings a whole new spin so that listeners get a whole new experience. However when Sara Cox took over from Zoe Ball she tryed to make the show far too similar in its content and style to what had gone before her, trying to take on a tried and tested formula i suppose. But the difference was that ...

Advantages: More varied playlist than commercial stations Disadvantages: Sara Cox, too much banter
DJ’s leave a bit to be desired. In the mornings there is the sewer that is the SaraCoxBreakfastShow. Due to Gospel according to Radio1 being that BreakfastShows must contain at least 90% ‘witty’ banter, this is practically unlistenable, even more so than Zoe Ball and Chris Evans before her, which is no mean achievement.
Following Cox is the holier than thou Jo Whiley. Because she plays new bands, Whiley regarded as having her finger on the pulse (or the NME at any rate). Although her show usually carries music of a slightly higher quality than other DJ’s, and her Live Lounge slot gives her a few extra bonus points, she does come over as being a little bit all-knowing and superior. Oh yes, and the TV programme ain’t all that either…
Mark and Lard have the afternoon slot. Broadcast from ...

Ok so radio1 is so cool and so hip,and SaraCox does the breakfastshow,and,and.......enough allready, its crap.
Dont get me wrong, the production is good and it can sound ok,but to me its practically the same stuff, different day,the music that they play is allways the same day in day out...you want to try listening to the station(radio1)all day every day(like i have to at work),you can very easily hear the same tune 3 or even4 times in 4hours,i mean come on wheres the variaty.
I mean get real dudes, not every one wants to hear crap like weetus all the time.
Thats why you should all boycott Radio1 and listen to your local staion....so come on and stick to ya local....you know you love it.

Advantages: Sometimes plays OK music Disadvantages: Not funny most of the time
I'll freely admit it - I'm a fan of SaraCox’s show on Radio1.
When it comes to breakfast-time shows, hers is the one, but every now and then I do listen to Terry Wogan’s show on Radio 2. Well, you know, Sara sometimes goes off on holiday, and sometimes the football/sports reports get too much for me, or the phone-in competitions, or the emphasis on whoever the latest teenybop craze is supposed to be (if anyone mentions Justin Timberlake, that’s it, my finger’s on the Radio 2 button straight away!).
OK so he’s my alternative to Radio1. That doesn’t mean I like his show. It's partly a lack of imagination on my part. I mean how many radio stations must there be? But I tend to frequent Radio1, Radio 2, Radio 4 and that's about it. Sad, I know.
Anyway, back to this leaving me sometimes ...
