Originally published in Switzerland and gracefully translated into English by Carol Brown ... more

Janeway, The Reader is a brief tale about sex,
love, reading and shame in post-war Germany.
Michael Berg is 15 when he begins a long,
obsessive affair with Hanna, an enigmatic older
woman. He never learns very much about her and
when she disappears one day, he expects never to
see her again. But, to his horror, he does. Hanna
is a defendant in a trial related to Germany's
Nazi past and it soon becomes clear that she is
guilty of an unspeakable crime. As Michael follows
the trial, he struggles with an overwhelming
question: what should his generation do with its
knowledge of the Holocaust? "We should not believe
we can comprehend the incomprehensible, we may not
compare the incomparable... Should we only fall
silent in revulsion, shame, and guilt? To what
purpose?"  The Reader, which won the Boston Book
Review's Fisk Fiction Prize, wrestles with many
more demons in its few, remarkably lucid pages.
What does it mean to love those people--parents,
grandparents, even lovers--who committed the worst
atrocities the world has ever known? And is any
atonement possible through literature? Schlink's
prose is clean and pared down, stripped of
unnecessary imagery, dialogue and excess in any
form. What remains is an austerely beautiful
narrative of the attempt to breach the gap between
Germany's pre and post-war generations, between
the guilty and the innocent and between words and
silence. --R Ellis, Amazon.com

...=== Intro === Whilst perusing the charity book list at work (books for 25p) I came across “The Reader”, and being vaguely aware that it had recently been made into a film and that it had issues surrounding the Holocaust in it I was quick to part with my 25p before someone else got it!

I haven’t been reading much this year, choosing instead to stare out of the train window at sheep. However, from the moment I picked up this book I was ...
...give away too much of the plot, I have read reviews which give away something quite major which we don’t find out until well into the story (although I have to admit I’m a bit slow and don’t ever really try to think about what is going to happen). Thankfully although I had read such reviews my memory is terrible and therefore it didn’t ruin my enjoyment of the story – it was all new to me!

A SHORT REVIEW FOR A SHORT BOOK THAT WAS SHORT OF SOMETHING.

Advantages: Quite gripping in parts
Disadvantages: Rather shallow book

== THE READER == === BERNHARD SCHLINK === === INTRODUCTION === The book was written by German author Bernhard Schlink , it was translated into English. by Carol Brown Janeway. This is a short book with only 218 pages that is divided into three parts. I had heard all sorts about this book, I was told it was about the holocaust, that it was a love story and that it was a "must read" Reviews I had read about the book all seemed favourable, it must ...
...that was played out against the repercussions of the Holocaust. So I was expecting the book to be a gripping read, I was disappointed. I carried on reading thinking that the book would get better and it never did. Let me stress before writing this review, I have not seen the film version of this book nor know anything of it apart from the fact that Kate Winslett is in it!! === PART ONE === Set in post war Germany, fifteen year old Michael Berg is ...

Read the book before seeing the film

Advantages: Easy to read
Disadvantages: Doesn't explore themes fully

...admit it, I jumped on the bandwagon with this one a bit because of the film. For those that haven't seen the film or don't know the synoposis it's about a man who as a teenager has an affair with an older woman after a chance encounter on his way home from school but she leaves him after a year without explanation. Years later he sees her again in a courtroom where she is under trial for atrocities committed in WW2, which he attends because of his ...
...the first surrounding his carefree days when they were in the first flush of a love affair with the authors style reflecting the protagonists youth and vitality. The second part dealing with his reactions to her past is markedly different in style and is much darker, reflecting the pain he is in seeing her in this situation and as he tries to deal with aligning the woman he fell in love with, with the 'evil' character that is portrayed in the courtroom. ...
