Jamie Oliver's style of cooking is quite different to a lot of the TV chefs these days, where they go for the perfect finish he tends to concentrate on the finish and the look of the dish whereas he is more interested in the freshness of the ingredients and the taste.
I have had this book for years but it has not been until recently that I have been using it. At first glance it seemed too fancy and weird. Not that any of the foods were difficult to find but it was different to the normal run of the mill cookery books. However I did keep it and having watched some of the programmes on Saturday Kitchen I see some of the recipes and I look in my book and there they are. Then you read it and look at it and then realise that it is not all that difficult at all.
I have recently been trying out the bread recipe and was stunned when it worked. One thing he doesn't say in the book is that you can leave the dough to prove over night in a cooler environment and that will make it more fluffy. I made some bread for the morning and wanted the dough to be all ready before and checked up on the interenet and it said you could and it really worked. Also before backing the bread brush the top with salted water and then you will get a crusty top.
There are a number of interesting ways to do vegetables in this book. Carrots with Cumin and Chardonnay works really well. I did a chicken tandoori and had this as it was an indian theme.
The chocolate twister bread is yummy too. One thing to remember though is that the cooking times need to come down when you are using a fan oven - my first attempt was a littl over done!
The main courses are great and even though they do seem too difficult, if you follow the receipe exactly as it says then you will be fine. You can do it, it's just having that confidence. If you are cooking for a special occassion then maybe have a few practices before.
This book has a number of soup receipes, pasta recipes and bread recipes as well as meat dishes, vegetable dishes and desserts.
Give it a go, the guy has so much passion you can feel it coming through the pages.
If you can see the receipe on TV being made it does make it a lot easier. Maybe his books should come with a DVD or something. Or he should do a DVD with recipe cards.

Another good review! For me, I'd be a whole lot happier if Jamie Oliver would stick to cooking books rather than programmes as he does my head in with his 'mockney' chat and his lolling tongue makes me feel sick lolol, still can't knock his cooking!

Advantages: Well designed, modern, appeals to men and women Disadvantages: I wonder if I will pick it up in five years time and think "he looks a prat on that chicken chaser of a scooter".
Advantages: Wide range of recipes from everyday to special occasions, clear layout and photos Disadvantages: Not a cook book for those who aren't fans of Jamie!
Advantages: Fantastic book for the progressive home cook, inovotive and versitile. Disadvantages: Not enough pictures, some recipies with no picure to aspire to.
