which stands in the same relationship to the Belgariad and Malloreon as The Silmarillion does to The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Before David Eddings started to write his first fantasy series the BELGARIAD in the late 1970s he spent a year working on the design and mythology of the fantasy world in which it is set. The Rivan Codex comprises the immensely readable background material to Eddings' best-loved series repeated information a lot of it but it's the books that repeat the information and these seminal documents have about them an air of original inspiration world-building in action. The rest of it is background which is taken for granted but not spelled out. History geography myths and folktales peoples gods customs social organization political hierarchy laws dress modes of address produce culture flora fauna all presented with so light a touch one can only yearn for Eddings to be taken up by academics so that his style might catch on in the real real world. The 12-book long series grew out of these delightful preliminary sketches like a river growing from a spring of striking purity and constancy. Magically the information reads fresh each time minimal Eddings prose beguilingly arcane in which massive events attain an all-time perspective.

Advantages: Disadvantages:
...will have to disagree with the two reviews on this site previous to mine. Whilst I agree that there is some interesting information in here, it is simply not an engrossing read. I have bought and enjoyed every single David/Leigh Eddings book and find some of the insight into the preparation of such books worth the effort, but I was content to not know this level of detail.

Great Advice in a Great Book Review ofThe Rivan Codex (Ancient Texts of 'The Belgariad' and 'The Malloreon') - David Eddingsby

Advantages: excellent reference guide, great advice Disadvantages: none
...away by this one. The amount of work that went into creating a fictional world was staggering. Eddings made everything so real that the stories must have just jumped out at him afterward. Another thing I was very impressed with was his personal struggle to become a writer and all the advice he gives a budding writer. For this *alone* all aspiring fantasy writers should read this book. And for those who love the Belgariad and the Mallorian, like me, ...

Advantages: a must for ALL fantasy readers Disadvantages: not a story book...
This is the hero of heroes when it come to authors, I'm sure that there are those of you out there thinking, what a load of rubbish....the best author is.....such and such, even when you look purely at fantasy there'll still be people that think Pratchett or Tolkien or even other...Kerr, Feist etc....
Well I agree the deserve merit, but really, anyone that has read eddings will understand that no one comes close to Eddings, he has created a world ... ...name it...Eddings is one of the few authors that can get you to laugh out load when reading....it's subtle humour, and you need to read his books a couple of times to really appreciate the humour. His writing guides you through his world until you can truly understand the driving forces for all the characters, he spends plently of time developing all the characters good and bad, you might not end up liking the baddies, but you'll understand where ...
