Take Of Mice and Men and transplant it in Gateshead. One character is tall, tough, thick, and of course, he's got a heart of gold. The other is short, tricky and a bit of a slime. Both are broke, both live for their footy team, i.e. Newcastle United. Write it in Geordiespeak. Amplify the poverty of the North to shock the genteel Southern literary agent, thus convincing him you're the Northern Roddy Doyle and thus making its rejection political. Cynical, but true...the author has won prizes for his short stories, which no doubt accounts for the poor links between the chapters and episodical nature of the novel - being filmed as Purely Belter, which no doubt led you here. Worth a good read, if only to spite to genteel assumptions of the London literary (And political) establishment.
