Advantages: Light-hearted, very easy to read Disadvantages: Slightly unlikely sub-plot and comedy
as Evie's confidant, but played a much bigger role in the later parts of the book.
I think the title of the book does not properly represent the plot within - Evie does not have a secretlife, but there is a secret affecting her life - maybe The SecretLife of Evie Hamilton's Family would be a better description?
Despite my reservations this is an easy read and would be great for holidays and leisure time. Very little bad language, no violent bits and some lovely descriptions of the English countryside - good for taking your mind off things.
As you know this was a present to me but I have seen it on sale for £7.99 upwards.
Enjoy! :) ...
Advantages: Strong characters, positive story Disadvantages: magical and therefore not true to life
This is a touching and humorous book, in which Lily finds herself searching for the truth about her mother. Living in South Carolina during the inception of the Civil Rights Act, Lily survives her father's hate and the weight of her mother's death. Very much alone, except for Rosaleen, her black nurse, she is an observer of life. When racial tension ignites she finds that she can no longer be passive and by chance she starts a series of events that leads to her finding the truth.
This is a warm hearted book, of friendship, love and care, despite the challenges of poverty, fear and hate. I enjoyed this book as it was easy to read and positive. However others may find it too 'nice' a story but for me this was just what I needed. ...

The Secret River
London 1806 - William Thornhill, happily wedded to his childhood sweetheart Sal, is a waterman on the River Thames. Life is tough but bearable until William makes a mistake, a bad mistake for which he and his family are made to pay dearly. His sentence: to be transported to New South Wales for the term of his natural life.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is the book of the month at our book club and is probably not a book I would have chosen for myself but is an extremely interesting portrail into life for people in that age and of the two countries.
This story is basically in two parts, Will's London life and then his Australian life. The two are most definitely linked to each other but in terms of Will's and Sal's feelings and adventures they are worlds apart, or you could say continents apart. The story ...

Manufacturer's product description
At the age of 19 Wadham ran away from English boys - who she found emotionally immature and sexually unconfident- and into the arms of a Frenchman. She soon discovered that romantic relationships in France were fraught with their own set of problems: not only do the French put women on a pedestal, but both sexes are required to act out the sort of seduction games that disappeared from English society centuries ago. Wadham, who dressed in Doc Martens and baggy jumpers, struggled to fit in...Twenty-five years later, having married in a French Catholic church, put her children through the French education system and divorced in a French court of law, Wadham examines the profound and varied differences between the Anglo Saxon and French world-views. Using her own experience, as a wife and mother, and later as an investigative journalist for the BBC, Wadham explores French attitudes towards sex, marriage, adultery, money, work, happiness, war, and race and in so doing reveals much about our own priorities and the nature of our identity. "The Secret Life of France" challenges our preconceptions about France and debunks many of the myths - bleak and rosy - on which our view of France rests, and asks whether we might have something to learn from this most infuriating and contrary neighbour? About the AuthorLucy Wadham was born in London and educated at Oxford. She has lived in France for the past 20 years. Her first novel, Lost, was shortlisted for the Macallan Gold Dagger for Fiction. She is also the author of Castro's Dream and Greater Love.
