Advantages: Great science and great storytelling Disadvantages: some harded science readers may find the storys out of place
with his aiding of the identification of the Russian Tsars family which were murdered during the Russian revolution. Bodies were discovered which may have been the family and their servants, Sykes helped identify them with the aid of a member of the British monarchy.
Sykes expands this knowledge and describes his efforts to sample as many peoples DNA across the whole of Europe. He eventually finds a pattern to all the different DNA samples. Sykes then makes an amazing discovery, that all Europeans can trace their lineage to just seven women which lived in varying times during prehistory. Eve's sevendaughters of Europe.
There are many individual stories which highlight what a strange mixed bag we as Europeans are including two fisherman in the Scottish highland with the same mitochondrial DNA but it had arrived on two very different ...
Advantages: Fabulous ending Disadvantages: Some of it is quite dull
Detective Lieutenant William Somerset is just six days off retiring when he becomes involved in the hunt for a serial killer. Aided by Detective David Mills, it soon becomes clear that the murders, although initially random, do have something in common - each of them is the representation of one of the seven deadly sins. Gluttony, for example, is represented by a man so overweight that he was unable to escape from his tormentor. Slowly, the two detectives begin to piece the evidence together, and Mills almost catches the serial killer, nick-named John Doe, at one point, only to narrowly escape with his life. Will they finally catch up with John Doe? Or is he destined to always be one step ahead?
Made in 1995 and directed by David Fincher, this film was much praised on release for being excellent in just about every way possible ...

Advantages: Funny and vibrant, good for most ages Disadvantages: Film reviews leave a lot to be desired
through the post and skimming through the glossy pages. However, my dilemma was resolved two months ago, when I casually added a copy of Eve magazine (apparently Britain's fastest growing women's glossy) to my Tesco?s shopping trolley. This decision was mainly because it included a copy of a book by Tess Gerritsen (grisly murder novel called The Surgeon) which I hadn?t read but had been meaning to for a while now. I was pleased with my purchase, as I had a great book and a magazine for £3, and I knew that if the magazine was rubbish at least I?d saved myself a few quid on the book.
Whereas Cosmo is directed at single women with no kids, but heaps of cash, Eve is aimed at a mixture of single and married (or like me ? attached with no sign of a wedding or an engagement ring!) women, who want a little more than how to have sex in twenty three ...

Manufacturer's product description
In 1994 Professor Bryan Sykes a leading world authority on DNA and human evolution was called in to examine the frozen remains of a man trapped in glacial ice in northern Italy. News of the discovery of the Ice Man and his age which was put at over five thousand years old fascinated the world. But what made the story particularly extraordinary was that Professor Sykes was also able to track down a living generic relative of the Ice Man a woman living in Britain today. How was he able to locate a living relative of a man who died thousands of years ago? In The Seven Daughters of Eve Bryan Sykes gives us a first hand account of his research into a remarkable gene which passes undiluted from generation to generation through the maternal line and shows how it is being used to track our genetic ancestors through time and space. After plotting thousands of DNA sequences from all over the world he found that they had clustered around a handful of distinct groups. In Europe there are only seven. The conclusion: almost everyone of native European descent wherever they live in the world can trace their ancestry back to one of seven women the Seven Daughters of Eve.He has named them Ursula Xenia Helena Velda Tara Katrine and Jasmine. In this remarkable scientific adventure story we learn exactly how our origins can be traced how and where our ancient genetic ancestors lived what their live were like and how we are each living proof of the almost miraculous strength of our DNA which has survived and prospered over so many thousands of years to reach us today. It is a book that not only presents the story of our evolution in a wholly new light but also strikes right at the heart of ourselves as individuals and of our sense of identity.
