Community Quote

The Shipping News is one of the books that I regularly re-read. I chose it initially because of the cover of my copy, a rough and icy sea breaking on rocks, and also the title of the book. Having been at sea for most of my adult life I thought this was one for me. There was also the little ... Read review

From Stormy Waters to Safe Harbour?

AdvantagesA strong book about finding youself in the right place.

DisadvantagesNone for me.

"The Shipping News is one of the books that I regularly re-read. I chose it initially because of the cover of my copy, a rough and icy sea breaking on rocks, and also the title of the book. Having been at sea for most of my adult life I thought this was one for me. There was also the little added bonus of it being the winner of The Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, The Irish Times International Prize and The National Book Award. There was the possibility ..." Sail Me Away to Newfoundland Diamond review

AdvantagesSimply a Superb book

DisadvantagesHollywood tried to make a movie out of it

"...I don't much like the sea except to look at. I totally hate swimming in it and I haven't a clue about sailing except that when I've been on small boats I easily get sea-sick - although I must admit the idea of a luxury cruise does tempt. But this book was on the shelf at one store in the San Antonio airport while I was waiting for the first leg of my return flight home last December. Since I had a few long flights ahead of me, and since I hadn't found ..." Read review

Dive beneath the surface for a good book Review with images

AdvantagesWitty, snappy style of writing

DisadvantagesPlot may be too slow for some.

"Not having seen the film, which I imagine would be pretty good with Judi Dench and Kevin Spacey, I was nonetheless attracted to it. (Of course I have read reviews that say the book is better than the movie, and yet some prefer the movie, so while I still want to see the movie, it is with caution.) So when I had the chance to read the book, I did. Was I impressed? Well, I wouldn't say it's the most outstanding book I've ever read. Good characters ..." Read review

I know it won a shed load of awards

AdvantagesThey Made It Into A Film

DisadvantagesSo Don't Bother Reading The Book

"...a pleb! I thought the film was wonderful; so why not read the book? Well, for a start the movie takes a much more light-hearted look at life in such a bleak environment. The characters are more likeable and easier to relate to. However, it was clear to me upon reading the first couple of chapters that these characters are indeed unfortunates of a high order. Poor Quoyle, the leading man if you like, is a shy, retiring, quasi-deformed and unattractive ..." Read review

The Shipping News

AdvantagesWonderful plot, amazing writing style

DisadvantagesStyle takes a little getting used to, slow to get going

"...but it is definately worth the effort, however, as with all of Proulx's work, don't expect a straightforward story with a beginning, a middle and an end, or you will be frustrated. This novel, despite it's strange twists and turns, reads like real life - for much of the time nothing really happens, but then when it does, however bizarre and however disturbing that thing might be, sooner or later life will just go back on, and you may never be sure ..."
