Shrine

Advantages: Very well set out story
Disadvantages: None

This was one of the first Herbert novels I read and as such my memory of it is pretty sketchy, however, I do remember thinking how different it was from The Rats which was my only other Herbert novel up till that point. This story was more of a ghost story as opposed to the horror element in The Rats, luckily I’m into both elements so I knew then that I’d found an author whose work was going to interest me. Anyway, the story itself. A liitle deaf mute girl called Alice has a vision of the Virgin Mary and is miraculously cured, this leads to the area where she had this vision (beneath an ancient oak tree) becoming a shrine. However, although the church welcomes this as it helps them re-establish peoples faith they are still sceptical of the validity of the claims, they therefore appoint a cynical local reporter to ...

Review of Shrine - James Herbert

This has to be my favourite James Herbert book!

Advantages: Could read again and again
Disadvantages: Not a book for the young

This was the second ever James Herbert book I read and I am so glad that I did! I was able to read this book in a relatively short period of time as I was so addicted to it and really just couldn't put it down for too long. The story line was really gripping and I actually found myself really getting into the characters lives too! Its a book that you must pay attention to, I don't feel its a book you can just pick up and put down when you feel like it. I feel you would lose out on alot of the story if you did this. This was such a pleasure to read and I would definately read it again! I feel it would make a pretty awesome movie! James Herbert's attention to character detail is amazing, you can really feel yourself imaging the character in that situation and seeing how they look and act. This book could be read again and again! ...

Review of The Dark - James Herbert

The fog by James Herbert... Can't get much better than James.H

Advantages: Great for lovers of gore, Amazing story line and really easy to get into
Disadvantages: I guess the gore if you aren't it to that type of thing!

I am a huge fan of the author James Herbert and was bought a load of his books for my birthday. I decided to read this one first and I am so glad I did. I found the book really gripping and was able to finish the book in a matter of days. Althought this isn't one of my favourite James Herbert books I did find it very readable and couldn't really put it down. Unfortunately with books I always try and guess the ending but I was unable to guess the correct ending! Although the book was rather gory I found that the gore just heightened my interest. I really enjoyed the fact that you got to learn about the characters in the book rather than having to guess what went on in their lives. The attention to detail on the characters was amazing, it really made you feel that you understood what the character was going through. I would definitely ...
