Sherlock Holmes and Watson are back in this second novel of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle who, after the incredible success of the previous (A Study In Scarlet) where the famous detective was first introduced to the public, was commissioned to write a second one which I am reviewing just now.

PLOT AND REVIEW
The story starts again from where we left, 221b BAKER STREET where a bored Holmes is fighting depression with the use of cocaine, awaiting a new case which would take his incredible mind back in use again and wearing his caring friend Dr. Watson's patience thin with his drugs usage. Watson is seriously concerned for his flatmate's health. Luckly enough a case soon arrives! A pretty young lady come knocking at 221b Baker Street seeking for help in a mysterious matter which involves a disappeared father and an anonymous person who, for years, has kept sending her rare pearls as a compensation for something which is still unclear to her (but we can easily guess is related to her father disappearance). She has been now invited by this mysterious person under the promise of finally revealing her all the truth that she has been neglected to know till now. She has been allowed to go with two other people with the restriction of them not being policemen, therefore Holmes and Dr. Watson agree to help her and take her to the meeting place, not knowing what to expect.
Without telling too much else of the plot itself, soon enough Holmes and Watson find themselves investigating a creepy murder once more! This time involving a stolen treasure, a deceiving wooden legged man, adventurous stories from colonial India, romance and, once again, the genius and incredible power of analysis of Holmes who will unravel this case, although not effortlessly!
"The Sign of Four" is a more than superb sequel to the imposing "A Study In Scarlet" which I also reviewed. I dare say it's even better than the first novel in many ways, as a matter of fact everything that made Holmes famous for in the previous novel is somehow enhanced in this one (action, mystery, suspense… etc). Doyle is once again a masterpiece of cliffhangers and every chapter is marked by an exciting ending which forces the reader to keep reading (I purposely started to go to bed at least a hour earlier than usual just to have more time to read!). We also get to know more habits and skills of Holmes that we weren't aware of from the prevoius novel and which will become, from now on, distinctive trademarks of Holmes character: his addiction to drugs when melancholic, his climbing and sporting skills which will reappear in other novels and short stories, his hinted chauvinism opposed to Watson's love of women in the most romantic -and Victorian- way and, finally, also for the first time, a sample of Holmes' renowned disguise ability! The story is somehow linked to the prevoius novel but not importantly, hardly at all actually. The previous adventure pops up here and there only "en passant" with no relation to the current investigation, so don't worry if you haven't read "A Study In Scarlet" but I suggest to read that too, if you haven't done already, because it's another great novel! With all my heart, if you have never read this novel I suggest you to find it (buy it or borrow it!) and enjoy it from the first to the last page and even if you have read it but hardly remember, perhaps it is not a bad idea to go and read it again; the story is not too long (never long enough!) and it went very quickly, hardly a week it took me to read it at slow speed, if I had more time I would have finished it in a couple of days.

Amazon is a great source of books but it can also be found on Play.com at £4.99 with free delivery. The library is also a highly suggested option.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - by SirArthurConanDoyle
INTRO
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is a collection of twelve stories by SirArthurConanDoyle, featuring his famous detective. It follows the novel "The Sign of Four" (which I already reviewed) and it is the first work on Holmes which has been written in the form of short stories. From what I could gather online, I can tell you that they were originally published as single stories in the Strand Magazine from July 1891 to June 1892. The book was published in England on October 14, 1892 by George Newnes Ltd and in a US Edition on October 15 by Harper. The initial combined print run was 14,500 copies. The book was banned in the Soviet Union in 1929 for occultism, although the book shows few to no signs of such material. Later, the embargo was lifted ...
