Be prepared for a few cold starts unless you have the brain of a poet and/or historian.
The Silmarillion shows the creation of Middle Earth and is akin to reading a Middle Earth bible. The way it enfolds the genesis of Tolkiens Middle Earth and its inhabitents is quite unlike his other works.
After reading the beginning three times I started to get my head around the his writing style , I think we have a pre-concieved idea of Tolkiens writing style from his later books on Middle Earth and this is something else, its Tolkien the historian creating a new world and to me was a very spiritual, poetic and dreamy read. If you are into Lord of the rings in a big way then this is really worth trying and re-reading until it all sinks in
