Farmer Giles of Ham by J.R.R.Tolkien

Advantages: Magical Story
Disadvantages: None

This is a review of the book only. This book is published by HarperCollins and is 144 pages long. "Its imaginative atmosphere and magic are best captured when it is read aloud, when it will live with all the force of 'a tale that holdeth children from play and old men from the chimney corner". ~About The Author~ I don't always do an "about the author" in my reviews but I have admired and been fascinated by J.R.R.TOLKEIN's work since first reading the hobbit at ten years old. This fascination has stayed with me into adulthood and as far as I know I have all or almost all of his work. Although Tolkien is best known for The Hobbit, The Lord Of The Rings trilogy and the Silmarillion, he has also written lots of other fantastic children's books: Leaf by Niggle:Which recount's the strange adventures of the painter, Niggle ...

Review of Farmer Giles of Ham: Complete & Unabridged - J.R.R. Tolkien

Review on J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit"

Advantages: Very many.
Disadvantages: None

I rate J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit" as pure excellence, a masterpiece to be read by fantasy readers everywhere! Why? Once you take it up you become so caught up in this fictional world of Middle Earth and so caught up in the plot that you are loathe to put it down. This award winning fantasy novel occurs some time before what happens in the book "Lord of the Rings", and thus focuses on Bilbo's adventures with the ring and Thorin's dwarves. So basically, if you read or watched "Lord of the Rings" and wanted more background information on how this ring got into Bilbo's possession this is the book to read. It's also a good book for all those who would have liked to find out about why the Mirkwood elves and dwarves have a rift between them. This book is a definate must read. If you don't believe me, buy and read it yourself ;) ...

Review of The Hobbit - J.R.R. Tolkien

For Tolkien fans only

Advantages: Great high adventure atmosphere
Disadvantages: Too solemn and tragic

I audio-read Silmarillion the last week-end (my girlfriend kept talking about it, so I gave it a chance). I had read LOTR a while ago and had enjoyed it although "The Hobbit" remains my favorite. As for this collection of "tales", it's a bit stuffy and too ceremonial in tone for my taste, especially the first stories, those about the creation of the world and the Valar and all that. I guess I liked the stories where I recognized things that were mentioned in LOTR, like the legend of Tinuviel, or the siege of Gondolin and some others. But the book is full of the stuffiness that Tolkien displays quite often in LOTR, especially in the third volume, with all those farewell ceremonies and glorious speeches ad poems. After audio-reading this, I really miss the funny, fairy-like tone of "The Hobbit" so I guess I'll be reading that again. So ...
