"The Simpsons - Christmas 2 Review"

The Simpsons: Christmas 2 is the second installment of 4 Christmas themed episodes from "The Simpsons". The festive episodes included here are "Homer Vs. Dignity", "Skinner's Sense Of Snow", "Dude, Where's My Ranch?" and "Tis The Fifteenth Season".

I really like Christmas episodes of "The Simpsons". To me, they're a tradition, up there with "Only Fools and Horses" and stuffing your face. They showcase the strong family bond they all have, and they love they have for each other. Along with being hilariously funny of course.

Homer gets a promotion in "Homer Vs. Dignity", but maybe not the promotion he thought of. While Smithers is away, Homer's job is to make Mr. Burns. This involves Homer doing humiliating tasks for fistfuls of money. It comes to a head when, as appearing as Santa in a parade, Mr. Burns offers Homer a million dollars to throw fish guts onto the children. Will Homer do it? An average episode really, the part with the panda is unnecessary and there aren't a huge amount of laughs to be had.

In "Skinner's Sense Of Snow" a relentless snowstorm hits Springfield, closing everything....well, except for Springfield Elementary. As all the teachers away, Skinner shows the kids a very long, boring film. At home time, the kids are horrified to see that they are completely snowed in. Skinner tries to take control, but the kids revolt. Meanwhile, Homer and Flanders try to save the school children. A good episode with some good dialogue between Homer and Flanders and maybe even a little social commentary about how ruling with an iron fist will see your subjects rise up against you. Ok, it's a class full of kids but it's kinda the same thing.

"Dude, Where's My Ranch?" has Homer trying to write a new Christmas carol when a lawyer says that the family can't sing the song they were singing because they would have to pay royalties. When Flanders tries to help, Homer instead writes an anti-Flanders song. It becomes a national hit and soon the family is annoyed by the constant playing of it, so they head off to a ranch to get some peace. Another gem of a song from The Simpsons writers'. They compose smart, funny, parody songs like no-one else can. A balance of the usual Simpsons antics with more family drama, as Lisa finds a guy she likes, only to find out he already has a girlfriend.

Finally, "Tis The Fifteenth Season" has Mr. Burns giving out Christmas bonuses. Strangely, he gives Homer a rookie card, that rookie being Joe DiMaggio. With both of them not knowing the fortune the card is worth, Homer takes it to Comic Book guy, whose gives him everything he has in his register. He takes the family shopping but selfishly spends most of it on himself. After watching a Christmas special, he is reformed, and vows to be good and unselfish, but this makes the resident good guy of Springfield, Ned Flanders, jealous. A rare example of a good episode made in the last few years, this episode has some very funny lines regarding Homer, his best lines are always when he's at his stupidest. At the end the town sing "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" which is a beautiful, traditional way to end the episode, it shows they can have a laugh and mess around but also end on a good, uplifting message.

No extras to speak of, except a multi-angle look behind the scenes in "'Tis the Fifteenth Season" which is something I suppose, there are Simpsons volumes out there with less than that. At £15.99 it's also very expensive, I suggest buying from eBay or amazon marketplace or somewhere like that, you'll get it a lot cheaper there. Five stars for the episodes alone.
