This year for Christmas, I purchased the new Sims PC game, "Hot Date," for my daughter. Meredyth is a lover of all the Sims games and can play them for hours at a time. This one looked quite interesting on the Amazon site, so I ordered it for her as soon as it was available.

I must admit that it has been one of her very favorite gifts - once we worked out how to install, that is. All of the other Sims games have been relatively easy to install. Not the case with this one, I'm afraid. Each time we would reach a certain point during the download (at 95% installation), it would stop and say that we had to install another disk that was nowhere to be found and one that neither Jon, Meredyth, nor I had ever heard of.

Meredyth and Jon both attempted to contact Technical Support on the Sims website, only to be disappointed each time. They were only able to reach "Technical Support Chat," who were simply a bunch of fellow Sims players - no technical support helpers. Many of them seemed to be having similar problems downloading this game.

It was Jon (surprise!) who finally worked out the problem. The file was downloading to fast, and the computer apparently couldn't read the information at the speed at which it was downloading. Since I'm not a technical person, this is like a foreign language to me. He explained to me that somehow he slowed the speed of the download, thus allowing the computer to read the information. This led to a successful installation. Meredyth is now able to play her game, but not without frequent "crashes," where she has to stop and reboot the computer. This is very frustrating for her. It is also aggravating to me, as I paid approximately $30 for the game.

I will admit that the game itself is fun to play, although some of the interaction between the Sims is of a more adult nature than I had anticipated. The Sims characters can go downtown to a restaurant and enter a "cuddle booth." Once inside this little love box, they can choose to embrace, lightly kiss, romantically kiss - I suppose this involves tongues? :), or make out. They also have a heart-shaped hot tub where the Sims characters can bathe one another. Ummmm.....sounds like fun for me, but thankfully Meredyth just thinks this is pretty silly.

The going downtown option is a new one and does include other things besides heading for the cuddle booth or hot tub. The characters can also go to the mall and shop for each other, go to the beach, have a picnic, visit the ice cream stand, or engage in other social activities.

Just how do I feel about this game? Well, I believe it should offer easier installation and better technical support, given the price paid for it. Also, I'm not so sure that I agree with some of the adult themes displayed. However, as I mentioned earlier, she finds it more amusing than enticing at this point. Let's wait and see how she feels next year...

I think perhaps I should have waited a year or two before purchasing this for her. I don't believe that I would recommend it for children under the age of 14. Also, I believe Maxis should work out the bugs before making it readily available for purchase.

Cool opinion Mom! I love this game but it makes me really irritated when it crashes and doesn't save my game!

Quite clearly there are some major bugs with this game which need to be sorted out. It took ages and several e-mails to the software company just to get the thing to install. Lets hope they bring out a fix for it and soon. Jon

I have just discovered the joy of playing the original sims game - cant wait to try out these new add on too! Hopefully by the time i get round to buying them, the company that makes this add on will have sorted out the glitches to the software! Mel x
