THis book is written by Julia Donaldson who is best known for writing the Gruffalo stories. In this book we meet George who is a giant and is not generally known for being smart - in fact he is the scruffiest giant in town!
He does get a bit fed up of being thought of as scruffy though, so one day decides to do something about it. He discovers a new shop full of smart clothes so he buys himself a new shirt, trousers, belt, tie, shoes and socks. He is so pleased he dresses in them immediately, leaves his old clothes at the shop and sets off home.
However, on the way home he meets a number of little creatures each with their own problem. First he meets a giraffe who has a sore neck. George does the only thing he can think of and offers his tie to act as a scarf, saying 'it didn't match my socks anyway!'.
For each little person he meets, he solves their problems by giving a piece of his clothing so by the end of the story he is only left with his trousers, which are falling down because he no longer has his belt, revealing a wonderful pair of red and white spotty underpants which are bound to make all children laugh!
After each act of kindness he goes on his way singing to himself a song about all that he has done. This song has a cumulative effect as after each donation he adds one more line to the original words. My daughter loves joining in with this song!
He suddenly realises that he is cold so returns to the shop to buy some more clothes only to discover it is closed. At this point he feels quite sad and desperate until he suddenly spots a carrier bag which has been left outside with his old clothes in. He gladly puts them on and eventually goes home.
When he gets home he has a lovely surprise as all the animals he has shared his clothes with are there and they have a present for him - a beautiful gold paper crown and a card! George puts it on and reads the message in the card which reminds him of all the acts of kindness he has given and ends with these words:
'So here is a very fine crown. to go with the sandals and gown of the KINDEST giant in town!'
It is a lovely ending and certainly provokes quite a discussion with young children about how good it is to help others and also about how it doesn't matter what you look like but how you behave is the most important. It is also good to discuss how appreciative all the creatures were and remind children how good it is to say thank you!
The story is accompanied by wonderful illustrations from Axel Scheffler. All of the pictures are very bright and bold and he captures a number of wonderful expressions on George's face. The page with the spotty underpants is very funny!
The book is published by Mcmillan and is made from good quality paper with an RRP of £5.99. It is a lovely story to share with children of about three years upwards as they can really start to appreciate the messages in the story. It is probably a very good one to look at with children who are not very good at sharing!
All in all it is a very good read and I recommend adding it to any children's book collection!
Advantages: good story, nice rhyme, excellent ilustrations, feel-good factor Disadvantages: can't think of any
...got fed up with reading the same English books again and again to our daughter. What else to do but log on, take advantage of the free UK postage over orders of 25 GBP and order 50 pounds worth of children's books from Amazon to be delivered to Granny's address. They arrived at the UK address after a few days and were with us in Poland after another 10 days or so. 50 GBP buys you actually quite a few children's books and with rationing the excitment ... ...One of definite hits in the whole package was selection of Julia Donaldson's books. 'Gruffalo' reviewed already on Ciao was one of the winners, but an equaly good one was 'The Smartest Giant in Town'.

Advantages: just the right length for bedtime, written in correct sentences Disadvantages: kids may love it to much (i know it off by heart)
George was a giant the scruffiest giant in town.... and so it begins George is a bit down about his apearance so he goes and buys some new clothes. On his way home he meets a whole host of animals with different dillemas and helps them out with by donating an item of clothing. For instance George meets a mouse whose house has burned down and kindly donates a shoe for her and her babies to live in.
The book its self is very nice to look at and at ... ...(my son stuck stickers on the inside pages and they peeled off easily without damaging the page). I loved the story, the length was just right and there was something to dicuss on every page. I've struggled to find a book that was written using full sentences without being too long or confusing, this book fits the bill exactly.
The illustrations are full page and very nice they tell the story on their own which helps if your child has trouble understanding ...

Advantages: Short sweet story with a moral! Disadvantages: Nothing really
The Smarted Giant in Town is a simple and endearing story of a Giant who wears old rags and longs to dress smartly. After buying all new clothes from his "local giant shop" he goes for a stroll through the village, meeting all walks of life in all states of distress along the way. Piece by piece he gives his clothing away to help others; his ties keeps a giraffe's neck warm, his shoe becomes a house for a single mother mouse and her children and ... ...for his clothes again. Finding the shop closed he picks his old rags out of the bin to stay warm. Feeling sad, he returns home where all those he had given his clothes to earlier were waiting with a thank you card and a gift of a paper crown.
In fact, there are two morals to this story, the first being the age-old "do unto others as you wish them to do unto you" and of course the second moral being that it doesn't take money and fine clothing to ...

The Smartest Giant in Town - Julia Donaldson
This was the first of Julia Donaldson's books that I read. It wasn't straight away a favourite but it has definitely grown on me.
It's a story about a friendly giant who one day decides that he doesn't want to be scruffy anymore so visits a new shop in town and kits himself out with a whole outfit. Unfortunately on his way home he meets a series of animals that have problems which he finds he can solve ... ...of the book he has almost none of his new clothes and he makes his way back to the shop to get some more. But the shop is closed...
It is a tale of kindness and has a silly song that is expanded upon throughout the story. There are a few funny remarks which we now use as jokes within the family which my 3 year old thinks is very funny.
This book retails at £5.99 although often you can find offers in WHSmiths or Amazon. I think we got ours from ...

...an item of clothing. By the end of the story, he has given away all his clothes, but gained many friends. A true falling-down- trousered philanthropist!
This story is fab! It is everything a good book for children should be- the repetition and rhyme allow children to participate actively in the storytelling, the illustrations are fun and bold,it has a moral at the end, and who could fail to fall for dear old George?
My children love this story, ...

- The SmartestGiantinTownJuliaDonaldson and Anna Currey have also created, 'One Ted Falls Out of Bed' which I am yet to purchase!
~ Price ~
When I bought my hardcover version it retailed at £9.99, however now it's gone up to £10.99.
I did shop around and got it for less than this so it's well worth looking for the best deals, some of which I have listed:
Amazon
~ Paperbacks are £4.99 or used and new from just 1p.
~ Hardcovers are £7.25 or used and new from just 1p so even given the P&P charges, a bargain!
~ Book and Audio CD is priced at £5.96 or used and new from £3.
Failing that, the local library is always a good option and well worth a visit!

to have lunch with the Gruffalo."
As you can see there is plenty to talk about in the book....after reading the book you can then go on to talk about animals and where they live eg foxes live underground, owls in trees etc...You can also talk about the dangers of going with strangers as the mouse is polite but says no!
This is aimed at children from about 3 - 6 yr old
But my 7 year old son still loves the story too.
