It seems to be the craze of late to turn children's fantasy novels into films. We've had Harry Potter, The Golden Compass, The Lord of the Rings (though not really a children's novel) and now we have the SpiderwickChronicles a film which is based on a whole series of books rather than anyone.
The SpiderwickChronicles starts off with Arthur Spider wick (played by David Straitharn) compiling his field guide to the secret world around us. He has discovered that we cannot see everything and all around us all manner of creatures exist from faeries to evil orcs and he has befriended some and made enemies with others as he has learned how to see them.

this is a great family movie based on the bestselling books by Holly Black and Tony Deterlizzi. The spiderwickChronicles follows the story of a mother and three children when they move to a remote home in the woods from New York. The house belonged to the familys relatives and is full of secrets and a room that hasn't been seen for 80 years. 'Jared' one of the children explores the huge house and hears eerie sounds and finds it mysteroius but no one believes him. Jared stumbles on to the key for something and explores the house to open something. He comes into the 80 year old room and finds a chest saying do not open. Excited Jared opens the chest and takes the book inside out. By doing this he breaks a magical spell and he reads the book by Arthur Spiderwick. The book tells him spells, and descriptions of how to find mythical creatures ...
Advantages: Good cast and characters, magical, fantasy, easy to watch. Disadvantages: None for me.
Do you still believe in fairies? Well whether you do, or do not, I would think that you might enjoy watching the shenanigans of these little creatures in the SpiderwickChronicles. This film is rated as PG and it is really a children's film but I guess that it will appeal to a wide age range of viewer. In fact if I was still a child, a proper one I mean, I think that it would be a little to frightening for me. However, with children these days being made of hardier stuff, I think that the SpiderwickChronicles is good all round family entertainment, though possibly not for the very young.
