Well did i hear anyone say Lord of the Rings?
I started the book hoping for it to be your typical - mystic quest, as the start of a series of books that may or may not interest me but i decided to give it a shot anyway.
It starts with a council of all different races deciding how best to save the world from the armies of evil, just like Lord of the Rings, and the fate of the word lies in the hands of one unlikely soul by the name of Shay and his brother Flick (Shay and Flick?? Sam and Frodo??). Flick accompanies him on this perilous journey north to preserve his life from the ring wraiths...oops i mean the skull bearers that are hell bent on the destruction of the young traveller, as with the sword of shannara Shay (being the last heir to the throne of shannara) is the only true man able to effectively wield the magical sword and rid the terrors of the great warlock.
Characters in the story show great depth and i can fully relate to them, from the 7 feet tall Allanon to the experienced highlander Menion Lee.
Early on in the book, Allanon is the mysterious historian who tells shay of his true heritage - that he is half elf and true heir to the shannara throne, the last remaining hope of the destruction of evil and trusts with him three elfstones only to be used in the greatest peril.
Awaiting you from the start is the perilous journey to entangle you in great encounters, close calls and mystical powers.
I do recommend this to anyone who loved Lord of the Rings, but take is a s a separate book regardless of the similarities!
