I think there’s a genetic defect in my family, the rest of my family tans lovely and manages to maintain it throughout the winter, but oh no not me! During the darkest months of winter and even the warmer months of spring, I still manage to maintain the classic English rose white skin. It’s not even that in my opinion, I feel I’d do a rather good job (and be convincing too) at impersonating a milk bottle!
So over the last couple of years in an attempt to look the tiniest bit healthy and glowing I’ve tried everything… sun beds, stand up sun showers, fake tan, tan maximising creams – you name it, it’s in my bathroom cupboard! Well obviously not the sun bed itself! Unfortunately I’ve also had to suffer the consequences… orange skin
(told everyone I’d had an allergic reaction), streaked face (told everyone it was wind burn) and the customary dirty brown colour (couldn’t think up one by then, was all out of ideas)!
However last year, as if someone up in heaven heard my plea, I was introduced to a fairly new, and totally dazzling concept – airbrush tanning.
What is it??? Well to me it’s an endless, natural summer tan – without the summer! Airbrush tanning is a radical and innovative concept that involves literally spraying your body all over with what’s known in the trade as a “spray gun.” Don’t worry it’s not like a gun at all, it’s almost like a small hover, as strange as that sounds! One of the old fashioned ones that sit on the floor and then have a nozzle which is rather like a gun – in this case that’s what the spray comes out of!
How does it work??? For those technical people among you out there airbrush tanning works by utilizing dihydroxyacetone (DHA) to react with your skinsamino acids to produce a golden bronze colour without the aging of the sun. The good thing is there’s no danger of skin cancer like there is with sun bathing and especially sun beds, plus there’s no ageing or any nasty effects! The airbrush tanning system in its simplest form, is the distributing of a tan colour to the skin utilising air compressors and an airbrush delivery system.
What’s the effect? Upon arriving for your tanning the most embarrassing bit is the stripping off! You can keep your underwear on (dark colours are recommended) but you’ll obviously get outlines of underwear that remain that dreaded milky white flesh colour! I usually just wear my knickers or a thong – believe me, the girls who do it will have seen it all before and aren’t interested in your cellulite or the size of your thighs… they just want it to be 5 o clock! Upon application it’s sprayed in horizontal and vertical strips over your body, it’s quite soothing actually, just feels like being in a very low powered shower and the spray is normally about room temperature. They’ll normally start at the top, and then do your legs and feet and lastly your face. (Tip – When doing your face, it takes about 30 seconds, hold your breath!) There’s a smell to the spray, the kind of smell that you get on your skin after being on a sun bed but it’s quite pleasant, more so than other fake tans I’ve tried in the past. The effect is pretty much instant, within about 5 minutes of the girl finishing tanning me I’d gone this lovely, and most importantly natural looking, golden brown colour! Just like I’d just come off the beach in Spain!
How long does it last??? The girl in the shop advised me that it would last up to 10 days with careful maintenance, moisturising can prolong the effect I’ve found. It’s best not to wash for a good 5 hours after finishing the treatment; you need to let your skin absorb the product first. I was very dubious when it came to showering for the first time, I was too scared to scrub at my skin like normal and when it came to drying I patted my skin gently! There was no residue on the towel and my skin didn’t fade at all so the next day I really scrubbed away and hey presto…. Nothing! It stayed identical and just as brown! Typically after about 5 days mine starts to fade – like I’ve been back off my holiday for about 2 weeks and not had much sun. By 9 days my skin has completely returned to it’s original milky whiteness!
What’s the damage? Well for a 30 minute tanning session (which will do your entire body) I’ve paid between £20 and £35 before.
So the benefits and the negatives? + No exposure to the sun so no risk of any harmful diseases or effects. + Fairly long lasting, minimum of a week. + Easy and quite quick to apply. + No missed bits, uneven bits or streaks. - Quite costly in comparison to sun beds and self tanning products. - Quite new and not widely available - Does dry out my skin slightly I think.
So there we have it, my answer to getting that even golden glow! If only I had my own personal air brusher, and my own personal supply of tan, and my own personal air brushing space, oh and that Audi TT too….

this sounds great, i think i'm gonna have to try this i'm so pale it's stupid. x x x
Advantages: An extremely convincing natural looking tan, lasts for ages!! Very quick to apply! Disadvantages: Can be expensive, also needs care and daily moisturising, some may be wary of standing half naked in front of a stranger!
